El Paso DWI suspect hits pedestrian on Mesa crosswalk in Cincinnati Entertainment District
An El Paso driver suspected of being intoxicated was arrested after hitting a pedestrian early Sunday in the Cincinnati Entertainment District in Kern Place.
Jesus Chavira Ortega, 54, was arrested on a misdemeanor driving-while-intoxicated charge, though police explained he had the right-of way in the collision.
A man was on a crosswalk, but walking against the traffic light, when he was hit by a pickup driven by Chavira Ortega shortly after 2 a.m. Sunday on Mesa Street at Cincinnati Avenue.
The pedestrian was crossing Mesa Street from west to east when Chavira Ortega was heading south on Mesa Street in a blue 2012 Toyota Tundra.
"The investigation revealed that the pedestrian was at a crosswalk however entered the street against the light. Ortega was unable to stop in time and struck the man," according to a police statement.

The pedestrian was hospitalized with injuries that police said were not life threatening. The man's name was not immediately available.
Chavira Ortega was detained by police working in the popular nightlife area near the University of Texas at El Paso. He was arrested and accused of being intoxicated after an investigation by a DWI Task Force officer who responded to the scene, police said.
According to a jail log, Chavira Ortega, of far East El Paso, was released Sunday from the El Paso County Jail on a $5,000 bond.
The same crosswalk has been the site of deadly DWI pedestrian collisions in the past.
