Abel’s expanding north and south

The Abel’s brand will expand north and south soon. Twin brothers Ellis and Austin Winstanley plan to open Abel’s North at 4001 W Parmer Ln. in the space previously occupied by Cool River on October 26. The grill and tap house will feature 60+ draft beers and a menu similar to Abel’s on the Lake with a few additional items, including bone-in steaks. The restaurant will feature a 7,000-square-foot dining area and eight banquet rooms.

Early next year the brothers plan to open Abel’s Rib House at 2330 S. Lamar Blvd. where Artz Rib House once stood. Ellis Winstanley says Abel’s Rib House will serve traditional barbecue fare (beef and pork ribs, turkey, chicken, sausage), as well as burgers and salads. The table-service restaurant will have an outdoor-indoor bar and private banquet rooms and offer 60+ draft beers.

The Winstanleys have made a career of buying established legacy brands. They purchased Star Seeds in September 2011, in between their sophomore and junior years at the University of Texas, and purchased Cain and Abel’s in 2002. They also own Abel’s on the Lake (purchased in 2009), El Arroyo (February 2012), The Tavern (September 2012) and Hill’s Café (January 2013). The youngest of their properties, Cain and Abel’s, originally opened in 1980.
