Shawn Cirkiel’s Chavez opens today in the Radisson Hotel

Lady Bird Lake has a new culinary overlook. Chef Shawn Cirkiel today opened Chavez inside the Radisson Hotel at 111 Cesar Chavez St.

The popular chef behind a couple of the city’s best restaurants (Parkside, Olive & June) was inspired by his life in Austin and family road trips to Mexico and the American Southwest. The result is a sleek, modern restaurant featuring a menu built around sharable plates that includes grilled meats and grilled fish, homemade tortillas, and tamales.

“It goes back to the blending of cultures—and for us, that’s who we are,” Cirkiel said.

Chavez serves breakfast (think local milled griddle cakes with wildflower honey and fresh fruit, and chicken-fried steak with farm eggs), lunch (grilled quail, an assortment of tortas), and dinner (lard tamal with peanut mole, herb-crusted mahi mahi with salsa negra).

The space, which features floor-to-ceiling windows, was designed by architects Michael Hsu and Jay Colombo of Michael Hsu Office of Architecture, with Jett Butler of FÖDA Studio creating the restaurant’s branding and graphics.

Chavez is open Sunday-Thursday from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday until 11 p.m., with the bar staying open late. (
