Launderette hands out ‘golden tickets’ in advance of groundbreaking

Matthew Odam

Rene Ortiz and Laura Sawicki are a clever culinary couple. The former Sway and La Condesa chefs had a little fun at the Waller Creek Picnic a couple of weeks ago with a playful marketing stunt. Inside their $100 baskets-built-for-two was a chocolate bar that contained a golden ticket. The tickets, which were in each of the 25 sold-out baskets, will give the picnic attendees and a guest entry to a sneak-peak dinner at Ortiz and Sawicki’s new East Austin cafe, Launderette. Construction is slated to begin this week on the old laundry building at 2115 Holly St. and the dinner will be held in September.

What can guests expect? It’s unclear, but the basket may have been a preview. Inside was chicken liver pate with orange-thyme marmalade and brioche toast; lentil salad with puy lentils, avocado, green beans, pecans and pomegranate vinaigrette; jambon and camembert on baguette with cornichons and Belgian ale mustard; mache salad with endive and Champagne vinaigrette; homemade potato chips and espellete; and caramel pecan squares.
