East Austinites are eagerly awaiting the opening of sweet and savory neighbors, Sugar Mama’s Bakeshop and Dai Due, so I checked in with the two for a status report.

Farmers Market staples and longtime supper clubbers Dai Due plan to open their butcher shop and restaurant at 2406 Manor Rd. in late June or early July. Jesse Griffiths and Tamara Mayfield will initially open their retail operation and serve dinner, with an eye on expanding to breakfast and lunch soon thereafter. While you wait for the store and restaurant to open, you can order some Easter goodies from Dai Due, including lamb porchetta, brined and stuffed boneless rabbit, and a Swiss chard, artichoke and cream cheese spread.

Olivia and Steve O’Neal’s Sugar Mama’s Bakeshop also hopes to open at 2406 Manor Rd. in late June. The purveyors of excellent cupcakes (cookies, pies and more) on South First Street are expanding their operation with a dessert bar with beer and wine cocktails from the Tipsy Texas, a regular pie menu, cake and cheesecake by the slice and a rotating seasonal menu of plated desserts from pastry chef Karina Akhavan.
