Terry Black’s Barbecue opens on Barton Springs Road

After about seven months of teasing and speculation, Terry Black’s Barbecue opened today at 1003 Barton Springs Rd. The restaurant is operated by Mark and Michael Black, great-grandsons of Black’s Barbecue founder Edgar Black, though the brothers’ uncle, Kent, has made it clear the new restaurant in Austin has no ties to the Lockhart original. The twin brothers say they plan to smoke over post-oak and make all sides from scratch, “old-school” like their grandfather Edgar Black Jr., who brought the small Lockhart restaurant to prominence. After the twins announces their plans to open in Austin, their uncle, Kent Black, announced he will be opening an official off-shoot of the Lockhart restaurant in the space formerly occupied by Boomerang’s on Guadalupe Street.

The restaurant moves into the space previously occupied by Pesos y Bucks and numerous other failed operations over the years. The brothers, who have helped out for more than a dozen years at the Lockhart restaurant run by their dad and uncle, say they plan to work the pits. Michael has worked the pits in Lockhart for the last three years.

The restaurant is open daily 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
