Obama eats John Mueller’s barbecue, reportedly declares it best ever

Matthew Odam

President Barack Obama got a taste of Austin before he even made it to the Texas capital. John Mueller catered a barbecue lunch for the president at Mark Stanley’s Dallas home on Wednesday afternoon. The owner of J. Mueller Meat Co. in East Austin served some of his famous barbecue to the gathered guests. The spread included his exceptional beef rib, brisket, sausage, turkey and several sides.

Stanley invited Mueller to cook at the party several months ago after seeing the episode of Anthony Bourdain’s “No Reservations” that starred Mueller and Aaron Franklin.

“It shocked the hell out of me,” a humbled Mueller said of the invite.

Mueller said he left Austin Wednesday morning around 7 a.m. and returned about midnight.

The notoriously feisty Mueller didn’t get a chance to meet the president, who was running a couple hours late, but Stanley told the barbecue master after the party that Obama tore into some beef ribs and brisket and declared it the best barbecue he’d ever eaten.

Mueller described the scene as surreal, with about 50 or 60 police on the premises, in addition to secret service. Asked the last time he’d been around that many officers, the witty Mueller quipped, “It’s been about 10 years.”
