The world’s oldest married couple live in Austin, met at UT
Flashback to 1934. Superman didn’t exist yet. The law caught up with Bonnie and Clyde. Hank Aaron, Judi Dench and Leonard Cohen all were born. And in Austin, a young man named John and a young woman named Charlotte met in a class at the University of Texas.
The couple wed on Dec. 15, 1939. On Aug. 28 this year, Guinness World Records verified that the John and Charlotte Henderson are the oldest married couple in the world by aggregate age, at 211 years, 175 days old. John, 106, was born Dec. 24, 1912. Charlotte, 105, was born Nov. 8, 1914. As of Nov. 11 this year, they’re a combined 211 years, 250 days old. The Hendersons celebrate 80 years of marriage next month.
When the couple met, Charlotte was studying to be a teacher, and John played guard on UT’s football team, according to a news release. John also is the oldest living Longhorn football player.
The couple says they spent $7 on their honeymoon hotel room. Now, they live in the Longhorn Village senior living community, according to the release.
According to Guinness, Masao and Miyako Matsumoto of Japan had held the record as of July 2018. Masao died in May.
