A walk with dogs, balloons and rosé fill the weekend
Spring is here, and that means even more outdoor events. Some fun stuff coming up this weekend:
The Mighty Texas Dog Walk
It's year 20 for this fun and charitable event, which raises money for Service Dogs Inc.
The walk is a "one-mile stroll" near Lady Bird Lake, and there are other activities as well, including live music, costume contest (this year's theme is high school reunion), raffle, giveaways and vendors, with a focus on dogs, natch. Some rescue groups will be on site with dogs available for adoption, along with trainers and veterinarians to answer questions.
Registration begins at 8 a.m. Saturday, and the walk at 10 a.m. ($30 to $100). You also can register or donate in advance at www.servicedogs.org. The event goes until 12:30 p.m. in the American-Statesman parking lot at 305 S. Congress Ave. Before the walk, a drone will be used to take a photo of people and their dogs for a possible Guinness World Record.
Service Dogs Inc. provides service animals free of charge to people in need who qualify, and all their dogs are pulled from shelters.
Georgetown Hot Air Balloon Festival and Victory Cup Polo Match
Balloons, fashion, food, drink, music and more, including polo: It's two days of fun and activities, some dependent on what our weather does. Buy tickets and see the full Friday and Saturday schedule at victorycup.org/bestoftexas. Prices range from $5 up to $1,400 for VIP. It all happens at Garey Park in Georgetown, 6450 RM 2243.
Enjoy the outdoors with people from Austin's LGBTQ+ community. Suggestions for this meet-up include bringing games, food and drinks (no glass), dogs (pick up after yours), blankets, rainbow flags, sunscreen, water and friends. More details on the Spring Gayz 2019 Facebook page, including a map of where to meet starting at 1 p.m. Saturday in Zilker Park.
Rosé Patio Party
Austin Eastciders is hosting this outdoor shindig from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at Cookbook, 710 W. Cesar Chavez St. Austin Eastciders recently released a Rosé Dry Cider, which will be available in $6 cans and in a $10 cocktail called "Strawberry Fields Forever." With live music, raffle and "flamingo toss." More on the event's Facebook page.
