Daniel Curtis: From accident to advocate

In case you didn’t catch this Monday: Story shared frequently through social media.

On Memorial Day 2011, Daniel Curtis climbed onto an above-ground pool behind his Southwest Austin house.

“I was going to throw the ball to the dog and dive at the same time,” says the former assistant food and beverage director. “My left foot slipped a little. When my head hit the bottom of the pool, it felt like a flash, then this numbness.”

Curtis, now 31, noticed that his legs weren’t moving and his arms were barely moving.

“I thought: If I could only just get to the surface,” he says. “I couldn’t even look up. All I could do is get to the edge, where I was clawing on the plastic to get to the surface.”
