Let’s go fly a kite

Dale Roe

Look, up in the sky — it’s a bird! It’s a plane! Even better — it’s a kite!

In just over a week, the big, blue skies over Zilker Park will be painted with colorful kites of all shapes and sizes. The annual ABC Zilker Kite Festival is slated for March 1, with a rain date of March 8 (last year’s festival was rained out both days; let’s not let that happen again).

The free event runs from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and features food and vendors in addition to contests including Most Unusual Kite, Largest Kite (must remain airborne for one minute to qualify) and Oldest and Youngest Kite Fliers. All competing kites must be homemade. Other family activities include moon walks, rock wall climbing, face painting, slot cars and bungee jumping. For compete rules and information, head to www.abckitefestival.com.

So you don’t sound like a newbie, check out these kite facts and trivia. Sprinkle judiciously into conversations or use them to intimidate the competition. Either way, you’ll be flying high.
