Readers clucking over our fried chicken sandwich list

When we released our top 10 fried chicken sandwiches list, some readers cried fowl. Matthew Odam ate about 20 fried chicken sandwiches in search of Austin’s best and somehow pecked … er, picked 10 to highlight in last week’s Austin360 cover story. The list included dining establishments like Fixe and Odd Duck alongside the dive likes of Luke’s Inside Out and Lebowski’s Grill.

But several readers claimed our rankings missed some worthy breaded birds. Many Facebook commenters wondered why Flyrite, a new local establishment specializing in the stuff, was left off the list completely.

Hector Dominguez: “Tried then all. Flyrite has the best sandwhich in town and doesn’t have hormones and other chemicals.”

For the record: Odam did try the Flyrite sandwich; as he told one commenter on Twitter, “Was dry & didn’t like bun or sauce idea. Will give it a 3rd try.”

Others defended the Barton Springs staple Shady Grove.

Ethan Greene: “Apparently you haven’t had Shady Grove’s fried chicken sandwich Austin360. I’ve had others on this list and it doesn’t even compare!”

And for those who are worried about keeping costs low…

Don McAlpine: “Bill Miller. $2.90 and delicious.”

Some people just like the simple things in life:

Eddie Brock: “I don’t care that it’s fast food and a chain, Chik-fil-A is the best, no questions asked.”

We welcome your input, but Odam stands by his list (and his stomach). Check out his top 10 at specials.mystatesman.com/fried-chicken-sandwiches.
