Fit Folks: Dr. Staci Hix-Hernandez, 35

Staff Writer
Austin 360

I work out to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle. As a plastic surgeon, I work in a demanding and stressful environment. Cardio and weight lifting are my escape. It is the one hour of my day about me, for me. I enjoy pushing myself to reach new fitness goals where the challenge is achieving a personal best.

Maintaining a fit lifestyle also helps me connect with my patients. Physical activity encourages healing and coping with illness, and it's an integral part to health management. I also use fitness as a way to show my support for my patients by participating in 5K and 10K runs and walks with them.

My goals include competing in bodybuilding contests next summer such as the Branch Warren Classic and Adela Garcia Classic. I will continue to work with my trainer, Melissa Merritt, as I prepare for the competitions.

We're looking for Central Texans who keep fit with interesting activities. Tell us — in 100 words or fewer — about yours. If you have a photograph, include that as well. Send your name, age and contact information to Pam Le-Blanc, Austin American-Statesman, 305 S. Congress Ave., Austin TX 78704 or e-mail it to
