Fit folks: Demi Tatsch, 18
I am a senior at Dripping Springs High School, where I play on the varsity basketball team. I am also a Type 1 diabetic. Staying fit is very important to my health.
I was told that I might never be able to play sports. Little did they know, nothing was going to stop me. I have to check my blood sugar eight to 10 times each day, and during games I sometimes have to check three or four times, taking insulin injections as needed.
Staying fit is very important to a diabetic and an athlete. I have worked with many wonderful trainers and each of them has stressed to me the importance of not only working out, but eating a healthy diet.
I have learned that first and foremost, nutrition is a must, preparing my body for the court. Activity is a must, too, to stay fit and prevent injuries. Third is my mind. Mental knowledge is very important to me. I work out approximately two to four hours each day. I run, do drills, weight train and do water workouts.
