The Outsiders: Michael Doherty

Austin 360

I have numerous outdoor hobbies that I pursue as much as time and weather allow: bicycling, running, motorcycling, among others. One I don't get as much of a chance to engage in is backpacking. In pursuit of my goal of visiting the highest point in every state, I recently embarked on a four-day trek to Gannett Peak, Wyoming's 13,809-foot highpoint. Summiting one of the most remote of the 50 state highpoints required snowshoes and other gear with no practical use in Austin. It was by far my most epic adventure to date, especially because I was mostly on my own.

We're looking for Central Texans who love the outdoors. Tell us — in 100 words or fewer — what your favorite outdoor place is and what you do there. If you have a photograph, include that as well. Send your name, age and contact information to Kathy Blackwell, Austin American-Statesman, 305 S. Congress Ave., Austin, TX 78704, or email it to kblackwell@statesman.com.
