The Outsiders: Kim Burk

Kim Burk, left, David Burk, Terry Geurink and Kelly Mack, back, take a break during a trek along the Ute Trail overlooking Aspen, Colo.

The Ute trail in Aspen, Colo., is an unexpected effort for the Texan lungs. Ascending 1,300 feet within a one-mile hike is a sweet challenge, littered with rocks, switchbacks and steep slopes. The challenge of the hike is obvious and is rewarded with a panoramic view of the town at the rock outpost. Though many locals condition themselves daily in the summer with this hike, one time might be enough for the tourist. Don't forget to make it a family affair. Active, beautiful and pet friendly, the Ute trail is symbolic of the Colorado town it overlooks.

We're looking for Central Texans who love the outdoors. Tell us — in 100 words or fewer — what your favorite outdoor place is and what you do there. If you have a photograph, include that as well. Send your name, age and contact information to Kathy Blackwell, Austin American-Statesman, 305 S. Congress Ave., Austin, TX 78704, or email it to kblackwell@statesman.com.
