The Outsiders: Marti Buckwalter, 65
Marti Buckwalter, 65

August marked my 65th birthday and 10th anniversary of mountain biking. In August 2001, the temperature was 106 at the Barton Creek Greenbelt when I did my first Ride Like a Girl bicycle ride. A program of the Austin Ridge Riders, the group teaches women basic mountain biking skills and trail etiquette. How special I felt to have Debbie right behind me hollering, "Level pedals!" and tons of encouragement. After a thrilling hour of amazing feats, I was so hooked! Ten years and three bikes later, I'm a Ride Like a Girl ride leader. Mountain biking makes me feel young enough to chase riders 15 years younger than me.
