Austin Music This Week: Celebrate Black Austin on Juneteenth livestream

Here’s a look at some of the Austin artists doing livestream shows this week, plus a handful of selected live music listings, as well.
OUR AUSTIN360 LIVESTREAM PICKS
Friday: Stay Black and Live: A Virtual Juneteenth Celebration. Nook Turner, founder of Jump On It, a long-running East Austin entertainment series dedicated to community building, hosts a streaming celebration of Black Austin voices. The music portion of the program kicks off at 6:45 p.m. with performances by Nook, Riders Against the Storm, Alesia Lani and more. The event will also feature poetry, statements from City Council Member Natasha Harper-Madison, Austin Public Health and local Black community leaders, as well as a “Miss Juneteenth” screening. The virtual event begins at 6:15 p.m. juneteenthatx.com. — D.S.S.
Sunday: Black Pumas album release anniversary celebration. How is it possible that it’s only been a year since the electrifying self-titled debut album from Austin’s rock ‘n’ soul sensation Black Pumas dropped? In the ensuing months, the duo sold out a slew of shows across the country and around the world, played a triumphant three-night homecoming at the Mohawk and taped their debut episode of “Austin City Limits.” They were nominated for a Grammy Award for best new artist and sold out an unprecedented run of four shows at Stubb’s BBQ, which were then postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Now, on the heels of their latest release, a haunting and beautiful version of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car,” the group will perform a special virtual anniversary celebration hosted by Texas Lottery and Margin Walker Presents. 7 p.m. linktr.ee/streamblackpumas. — D.S.S.
Sunday: Jenny Reynolds record release. A native of New England who’s been in Austin for nearly two decades, Reynolds serves up 10 tracks of colorful acoustic folk reminiscent of Suzanne Vega on her latest album. Recorded with co-producers Mark Hallman and Andre Moran at Hallman’s storied Congress House Studio, “Any Kind of Angel” features contributions from several notable local musicians including Betty Soo, Warren Hood, Scrappy Jud Newcomb and Oliver Steck. 5 p.m. facebook.com/austinjennyreynolds. — P.B.
Tuesday: Betty Soo’s “Nobody’s Happy Hour” with guest Will Sexton. One of Austin’s best singer-songwriters long before she recently teamed up with Rebecca Loebe and Grace Pettis in the promising new trio Nobody’s Girl, Soo features a different special guest every Tuesday for this livestream series with a tongue-not-quite-in-cheek name. A solid booking this week is Sexton, who left Austin for Memphis a few years ago but still has strong ties to the town where his star rose alongside his older brother, Charlie. 6:30 p.m., bettysoo-6-23.rsvpify.com. — P.B.
Thursday: Bonnie Whitmore’s Virtual Gallery with guest Dave Madden. Our Austin360 Artist of the Month for June, singer-songwriter Whitmore shines on her new album, “Last Will & Testament,” which mixes elements of rock, soul, pop, blues, country and more. Her Thursday livestreams, adapted from her pre-pandemic long-running Thursday residency at the Continental Gallery, feature a different guest each week; this time it’s keyboardist Madden, who’s gained a solid online following of his own for his Sunday “Isolation Congregation” livestreams. 8:30 p.m., bonnieanddave.app.rsvpify.com. — P.B.
