Daniel Johnston, the Austin singer-songwriter and artist who created the iconic Hi How Are You mural on the Drag, died in September at an assisted living facility in Houston. He would have been 59 on Wednesday.

Throughout his life, Johnston struggled with mental illness and for the third year in a row, directors of the Hi How Are You Project, a mental health awareness nonprofit, have booked a concert celebrating his legacy on his birthday.

Musicians, including Cage the Elephant, White Denim and Tunde Adebimpe from TV on the Radio will play Hi How Are You Day 2020, a concert that mixes original music from the artists with tributes to Johnston at ACL Live in the evening.

A free livestream of the event is available on Stingray.

Earlier in the day, the Harry Ransom Center will present Adebimpe, Ethan Azarian and Kendra Sells reading and performing a selection of Johnston’s music and poetry as part of the Poetry on the Plaza series on the UT Campus at noon.

The Ransom Center event is free and open to the public.
