Refill that Cup of Ambition: Dolly Parton birthday tribute returns to Barracuda
Last year’s birthday tribute to Dolly Parton at Barracuda raised more than $3,000 last year for Front Steps, the nonprofit that runs the Austin Resource Center for the Homeless, It was also a genuinely great night, with artists ranging from blues-guitar phenom Jackie Venson to indie-rock stylist Walker Lukens to pop-soul singer Melat to White Denim’s James Petralli cruising through songs under the guidance of KUTX’s Diedre Gott, a Dolly megafan who organized the show.
One good turn deserves another. Jan. 18 brings “Cup of Ambition: A Dolly Parton Birthday Bash” back to the Red River Cultural District nightclub, with Gott once again assembling a stellar lineup of local luminaries for another Front Steps benefit. Advance tickets, $15, are available via the venue’s website.
House band the Steep Cats will back up nearly two dozen acts in a deep dive through the Dolly catalog. Highlights include Wild Child’s Kelsey Wilson, Sweet Spirit/A Giant Dog singer Sabrina Ellis, Go Fever’s Acey Monaro and Ben Burdick, Moving Panoramas’ Leslie Sisson and Cara Tillman, My Jerusalem’s Jeff Klein, soulful singer Tameca Jones, Stephanie Bergara of Bidi Bidi Banda, and LouLou Ghelichkhani of Night Glitter and Thievery Corporation.
Alson on board are Christelle Bofale, Sarah Dossey, Michael Booher, Elizabeth McQueen, Bryce Clifford, Spencer Gibb, Caleb De Casper, Gretchen Dupre, Jake Miles & Mary Bryce of Smiile, Rockyanne Bullwinkel of the Reputations, and Mariclaire Glaeser (who recently announced her departure from Shy Beast).
Parton’s birthday is actually Jan. 19 — she’ll be 74 this year — but it’s likely the post-show revelry at Barracuda will run up to midnight for an official ringing-in of Dolly-day.
Here’s video of Venson and host Gott doing one of Dolly’s best-known hits, “Jolene,” at last year’s show:
