Austin New Year’s Eve on the cheap: 10 ways to ring in 2020 for $10 or less

With extravagant dinners, pricey champagne pops and black-tie affairs, New Year’s Eve is peak playtime for the big spenders among us. But if you’re not trying to break the bank as 2020 begins, fear not. Here are 10 spirited NYE celebrations you can check out for $10 or less.

Pat! at Cheer Up Charlie’s. Best known for her work with Le Tigre and Men, NYC-based artist, JD Sampson has been hosting Pat!, an event she describes as “a party for anyone from anywhere wearing anything and loving who they want” for seven years. Sampson and fellow Pat! resident DJ, Amber Valentine will liven the club’s outdoor stage with a mix of everything from classic disco to house music, while local pop queens, P1nkstar, Y-Two Kwane and GirlFriend ATX keep the party going inside. The event will also feature live visuals and a photo booth. $5 suggested donation. 9 p.m. 900 Red River St. More info.

NYE at the White Horse. Two-step your way into 2020 at East Austin’s favorite country dive. Devin Jake kicks the night off at 8 p.m. followed by Leo Rondeau at 10. Aaron McDonnell & the Neon Eagles will play twangy 2020 toast tunes at midnight. $5. 8 p.m. 500 Comal St. More info.

Candi Pop at the Parish. Lights and Music Collective host a celebration of guilty pleasure bubblegum pop tunes. Sing along to the likes of Katy Perry, the Jonas Brothers, the Spice Girls, TLC and many more. Organizers also promise there will be plenty of glitter, lollipops, rainbows, unicorns and girl power at the event. $10. 8 p.m. 214 E. Sixth St. More info.

The Butter Ball at Shangri La. Kick it old school style as DJ Jester The Filipino Fist and DJ Dangit spin throwback jams from the ‘80s, ‘90s and ‘00s. $10. 8 p.m. doors. 1016 E. Sixth St. More info.

We Are All Stardust at Indian Roller. The South Austin bar and lounge takes out 2019 with a tribute to the Thin White Duke. David Bowie cover band, Super Creeps play a set at 10 p.m., then DJ Aquamarine hosts Rebel Rebel, a Bowie themed dance party. Champagne Karaoke at Last Straw. Why watch the entertainment, when you can be the entertainment? DJ Ella Ella gets the party started from 6 to 8 p.m., then it’s open mic karaoke for the rest of the night. Organizers promise a special cocktail and bubbles menu as well as plant-based party food. At midnight Chairman's Reserve Rum will serve up a complimentary “first daiquiri of the decade.” No cover. 6 p.m. 1914 E. Sixth St. More info.

Mau Mau Chaplains at Flamingo Cantina. Start 2020 on a high vibe with Austin’s lake party reggae lifers. DJ Jah Bill will be on the decks between sets and Winston will be serving Caribbean cuisine in the back. $10. 9 p.m. 515 E. Sixth St. More info.

Soul Shindig at Drinks Lounge. DJs Topper James and Sergio Delgado spin sixties club soul, Motown and funk on vinyl. No cover. 9 p.m. 2001 E. Cesar Chavez. More info.

Boogie Night Disco Dancin’ New Year’s Eve at Stay Gold. New disco tribute band, Boogie Night premieres with a promise to play “the top 30 disco tunes of all time note for note.” In between sets, they will spin dance floor banging obscure disco deep cuts. $10. 10 p.m. 1910 E. Strange Country at the Aristocrat Lounge. DJ John Schooley helps you kick off 2020 with an all-vinyl set of “space-age pedal steel instrumentals and spaghetti western themes.” The club promises drink specials, champagne and classy atmosphere.
