Here’s what’s happening in the Live Music Capital of the World this week.
OUR TOP PICKS
Friday: Armadillo Christmas Bazaar kickoff with Dale Watson, Gina Chavez, Ulla at Palmer Events Center. An Austin holiday tradition since the mid-1970s, this 12-day event is first and foremost a shopping extravaganza, with dozens of booths featuring all manner of gift items. But music has been central to the bazaar’s identity since its initial years at the iconic Armadillo World Headquarters (that’s where the name comes from). The first night features an array of local acts, with honky-tonker Dale Watson at 7 p.m., Latin rock-pop stylist Gina Chavez at 3 p.m. and the recently-formed Irish-music outfit Ulla at noon. $10 (free for ages 12 and under); $50 season pass. 900 Barton Springs Road. armadillobazaar.com. — P.B.
Friday: Molly Burch’s Holiday Party at Scholz Garten. If you’re hankering for a booze-soaked soiree to conjure the ghost of college Christmas parties past, Molly Burch is cooking up just the thing. Her latest release, “The Molly Burch Christmas Album,” reently came out. Her velvety vocals are a natural fit for classic holiday songs, though she made an effort to include nontraditional wintry songs and deep cuts on her record. For the Scholz Garten show, Burch has partnered with voter outreach group Headcount, so attendees can register to vote at the show, and charitable giving organization Plus1. $17-$19. 8 p.m. 1607 San Jacinto Blvd. scholzgarten.com. — Johanna Gretschel
Saturday: Austin Music Video Festival at the Alamo Drafthouse. Founded in 2015 with a dual mission to forge connections between Austin’s music and film communities and elevate the discussion of music videos as short-form art films, the festival has expanded each year. This year’s program is its most robust to date. The fest kicked off on Tuesday, but if you can only make one day, this Saturday roster is loaded. The afternoon kicks off with Sabrina Ellis and Andrew Cashen hosting a Sweet Spirit vs. Giant Dog retrospective, followed by a performance from the duo. Later in the day, Alexander Beggins and Kelsey Wilson host a Wild Child showcase and then perform. The evening is capped off with the AMVF Awards show, which will feature pop-up performances, world premieres and special guests. $40 (Saturday only); $85-$105 (five-day pass). Events begin at noon. 320 E. Sixth St. amvfest.com. — D.S.S.
Saturday: Stronger than Dirt 25th anniversary at the 13th Floor. DJ Scott Gardner has been serving up a Saturday night party platter of underground and alternative rock ’n’ roll since community radio station KOOP 91.7 FM opened its doors in December 1994. The show originally focused on garage and punk but over the years evolved to incorporate a broader spectrum of rock music, including psychedelic, glam, power pop and more. To celebrate the show’s 25th anniversary, Gardner will present a live broadcast of the show from 8 to 10 p.m. Afterward, a cohort of KOOP-ers will keep the party rocking. Free. 8 p.m. 1812 E. 12th St. koop.org. — D.S.S.
Saturday: Bruce Robison & Kelly Willis 20th annual Holiday Shindig with Patty Griffin at Paramount Theatre. Austin’s first couple of country music got this party started way back at the tail end of the last millennium. To celebrate the two-decade mark, they’ve called in one of our city’s most prominent and beloved musical artists. Griffin’s self-titled album, released earlier this year, extended a stellar career that has included a Grammy Award, and her contribution to a new Tom Waits tribute album is magnificent. Willis and Robison will play songs from their 2006 “Happy Holidays” record plus other seasonal favorites. If we’re lucky, they’ll roll out those family home movie clips again, too. $30-$48. 8 p.m. 713 Congress Ave. austintheatre.org. — P.B.
Sunday: Paul Klemperer's 8th annual Festivus Celebration at Barrel O’ Fun. Do Christmas commercialism and manufactured merriment leave you feeling Scroogey? Paul Klemperer feels your pain. The jazz sax man hosts a celebration of the cynical “Seinfeld”-inspired holiday, leading his crew in a series of songs and airing of grievances around the Festivus pole. Klemperer promises other Festivus traditions, like feats of strength, and observance of Festivus miracles also will be part of the event. 7 p.m. 1911 Aldrich St., Suite 120B. pksax.com. — D.S.S.
