OUR TOP PICKS

Friday-Saturday: RIP Monofonus Press weekend at Hotel Vegas. Founded by Morgan Coy in 2007, the Austin-based record label/publishing house has put out well over 100 releases on vinyl, CD and cassette tape. They’ve also released more books, ‘zines and DVDs than they can count. In 2019, Coy and crew have decided the experiment has run its course and they’re ready to fondly close the chapter on this phase of their creative work. Bands are traveling from Australia, England and all over the United States for the farewell shindig. Ben Wallers’ provocateur alter-ego, the Rebel and post-punk trio, Spray Paint top the bill on Friday and experimental artist Sun Araw will close the night on Saturday. There are also free shows at the Monofonus Compound on Friday and Sunday. $10 single-day. 9 p.m. 1502 East Sixth St. facebook.com/monofonus. — D.S.S.

Saturday: Rufus Wainwright at Paramount Theatre. It seems impossible to put any kind of useful frame around Wainwright’s career. Immediately drawing attention as a songwriter with a show-stopping voice with his self-titled debut album two decades ago, he proceeded to blur lines between popular and classical music on subsequent releases, eventually leading to his 2009 opera “Prima Donna.” He’s done a second opera since then, along with an album of Shakespeare sonnets set to music with guests including Carrie Fisher and William Shatner. His first album of original material since 2012’s “Out of the Game” appears imminent after a new single, “Trouble in Paradise,” arrived earlier this month. Primarily a pianist but also proficient on guitar, he’ll perform solo at this show. E.B. the Younger opens. $35-$55. 8 p.m. 713 Congress Ave. austintheatre.org. — P.B.

Saturday: Abhi the Nomad at Scoot Inn. With the release of his excellent 2018 album “Marbled,” Indian-born, Austin-based rapper Abhi the Nomad began a rapid rise through the ranks of the national and international hip-hop underground. He dropped a solid follow up, “Modern Trash” in October and kicked off the album’s support tour with his debut appearance at Austin City Limits Festival. After a marathon cross-country jaunt, this gig should be a triumphant homecoming. Full band hip-hop outfit Magna Carda and Atwood open. $15. 8 p.m. doors. 1308 E 4th St. scootinnaustin.com. — D.S.S.

Saturday: Daniel Johnston “Speeding Motorcycle” reunion at Carousel Lounge. Tributes to the legendary outsider artist and songwriter have popped up frequently since his death in September, but this one has its own special twist. Members of the band and cast of the 2008 Zachary Scott production of “Speeding Motorcycle,” a musical based on Johnston’s tunes, are reconvening for this 20-song performance. Among the participants are Kathy McCarty, Bill Anderson, Leila Henley, Terri Lord and Bruce Parton. Free. 9:30 p.m. 1110 E. 52nd St. carousellounge.net. — P.B.

Saturday: Hard Luck Lounge closing party. An easygoing hangout in East Austin since 2014, the Hard Luck is closing up shop, but not without a final bash that will feature many local musicians who have played at the venue during its five-year run. Among those expected to appear are David Ramirez, Ben Ballinger, Missy Beth & the Morning Afters, Mrs. Glass, Robert Allan Caldwell, Duane Mark, Cory Johnson, That Damned Band, Rattlesnake Milk and Candler Wilkinson IV. Check facebook.com/hardlucklounge for start time and admission info .3526 E. Seventh St. — P.B.

Sunday: Purgatory Players at El Mercado Backstage. This long-running residency, which moved from Strange Brew to El Mercado after the former’s closure a few years back, is Austin’s Sunday brunch musical gig. The regular cast includes local mainstays Jon Dee Graham, Jeff Plankenhorn, Seela Misra, Jon Greene and Scrappy Jud Newcomb, but for Thanksgiving week they put out a call to a long list of guests to join in for a big Central Texas Food Bank fundraiser. Among those taking part will be Pat Byrne, Stephen Carolan, Rich Brotherton, David Pulkingham, Kathy McCarty, the Guy Forsyth Band, Jenny Reynolds, Jenifer Jackson and Trey Wolf. A matching donor has promised to match all donations up to $2,000. 11 a.m. 1302 S. First St. austinbackstage.com. — P.B.

Wednesday: Angélica Rahe at Mohawk indoor. The Spanish American artist, who did a stint as music director, guitarist and backup singer for Kali Uchis, quietly relocated her American home base to Austin over the last year. She’s gearing up for the release of her debut full-length album in February and just dropped the lead single “Como Yo” which features her gauzy vocals trembling with lust over a lush soundbed that gives way to a poignant regret rap from Dallas artist Cure For Paranoia. This show is the kick off for a national and international tour that will stretch into early 2020. Camera Cult and Cure for Paranoia open. $10-$13. 7 p.m. 912 Red River St. mohawkaustin.com. — D.S.S.
