Music this week: Jidenna, Black Keys, Blue Corn anniversary, more
Here’s what happening in the Live Music Capital of the World this week.
OUR TOP PICKS
Saturday: Ray Wylie Hubbard’s Birthday Bash at Paramount Theatre. Year 73 for the patron saint of Texas troubadours has been a good one, including his first-ever appearance at the Grand Ole Opry. Could “Austin City Limits” be far behind? Maybe next year, but in the meantime, Hubbard will celebrate with his annual shindig at the Paramount that sometimes draws surprise special guests alongside his regular backing band that features son Lucas Hubbard on guitar. $25-$42. 8 p.m. 713 Congress Ave. austintheatre.org. — P.B.
Sunday: Jidenna at Emo’s. Born in Wisconsin, rapper-singer-producer Jidenna split his childhood between small-town America and Enugu, a city in his father’s homeland, Nigeria. He weaves the wisdom and melodies of both worlds into his music. His 2019 release, “85 to Africa,” takes listeners on a rich, intercontinental voyage. Signed to Wondaland Records, he trains at Janelle Monáe’s Atlanta-based boot camp and brings a theatrical flair and ecstatic energy to his live shows. Deante Hitchcock and Kelechi open. $25-$28. 7 p.m. doors. 2015 E. Riverside Drive. emosaustin.com. — D.S.S.
Sunday: Blue Corn Celebration with Grupo Fantasma, Ruthie Foster, more at 04 Center. A benefit for the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians, this party marking the 20th anniversary of the Houston-based label that has released albums by many Austin roots music acts features Grammy winners Grupo Fantasma and Grammy nominee Ruthie Foster at the top of the bill. Also appearing are Gary Nicholson, Roger Blevins of Mingo Fishtrap, Rebecca Loebe, Adam & Chris Carroll, Jeff Plankenhorn, Rich Brotherton, and the Two High String Band with members of Wood & Wire. $25-$45. 6 p.m. 2701 S. Lamar Blvd. 04center.com. — P.B.
Tuesday: Austin Blues Society Awards at Antone’s. In its second year, this celebration of Austin’s traditional blues community honors three acts, all of whom will perform as part of the evening’s events. This year’s Lifetime Achievement award goes to W.C. Clark, so respected in the local community that an “Austin City Limits” episode honoring him aired in 1990, with Stevie Ray Vaughan among those who took part. Best Blues Band honoree is the East Side Blues Syndicate, while Oscar Ornelas gets the nod for Best Blues Artist in recognition of his acclaimed 2019 album, “Some Gospel.” $15. 7 p.m. 305 E. Fifth St. antonesnightclub.com. — P.B.
Wednesday: Black Keys at Erwin Center. Dan Auerbach has gotten so busy in his adopted home of Nashville as a record label and studio producer — he’s behind the remarkable recent albums from Yola and Robert Finley, among others — that one could almost forget he and drummer Patrick Carney’s band the Black Keys remain big enough to play arenas. They’ll focus on songs from this year’s “Let’s Rock,” but there’s quite a bit more action on this bill besides the dynamic duo. Acclaimed Northwest indie band Modest Mouse plays the middle slot, while Shannon & the Clams, another act Auerbach produced and released on his Easy Eye Sound label, open. $29.50-$499.50. 7 p.m. 1701 Red River St. uterwincenter.com. — P.B.
Wednesday-Thursday: Metalachi at Antone’s. Hailing from Hollywood via Juarez, Mexico, the five-piece ensemble infuses your favorite hair metal power ballads with the lovesick warble of traditional mariachi tunes. With a keen sense of humor and over-the-top theatrics, the crew says they aim to land their shows somewhere between the worlds of Spinal Tap and Cheech & Chong. If you’ve been yearning for mournful violin in your “Bohemian Rhapsody,” or a trumpet fanfare to welcome you to the jungle, this is your ticket. Surf rockers Shark in the Water open. $18-$20. 9 p.m. 305 E. Fifth St. antonesnightclub.com. — D.S.S.
