Her'es what's going on in the Live Music Capital of the World this week (that's not Austin City Limits Music Festival).
OUR TOP PICKS
Saturday-Sunday: Nick Cave at ACL Live. For this tour, Cave is presenting an evening of talk and music, an experience he describes as “an exercise in connectivity.” Between Bad Seeds classics such as “The Ship Song” and “The Mercy Seat,” he takes questions from the audience. No subject is off limits; Cave challenges his fans to be “bold and challenging, confrontational and unafraid.” Reports from the tour describe a warm communal atmosphere in which Cave is poetic, profound and often very funny. He's also been playing the late Daniel Johnston's song "Devil Town." Sunday sold out. $39.50-$79.50. 8 p.m. 310 Willie Nelson Blvd. acl-live.com. — D.S.S.
Monday: Wu-Tang Clan at ACL Live. Real talk: Over the past decade, Wu-Tang shows have been hit or miss, depending on which members of the crew actually show up. But for this tour, celebrating the 25th anniversary of their genre-reshaping debut album “Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers),” most of the surviving members of the Clan have been present at most of the dates. Old Dirty Bastard’s son, Young Dirty Bastard, has been handling his father’s verses. Following the release of Showtime’s excellent documentary “Of Mics and Men” earlier this year and a new scripted Hulu series, “Wu-Tang: An American Saga,” the clan is clearly thinking about their legacy and reminding us that a quarter century later, they still “Bring da Ruckus.” $89-$165. 8 p.m. 310 Willie Nelson Blvd. acl-live.com. — D.S.S.
Wednesday: John Lennon Birthday Tribute with #9 Orchestra at 3Ten. An annual show that began in 1990 to celebrate the iconic Beatle’s birthday — he would have been 79 this year — had to find a new venue after Threadgill’s World Headquarters closed late last year. Downtown room 3Ten seems an ideal new spot for the 11-piece crew that includes Stephen Doster, Andy Salmon, Tommy Taylor, Ben Cocke, Maria Nehring, Shana Norton, Bruce Marton, Dave Moerbe, Sam Jeffrey, Stephen Jeffrey and Kelly Hodge. 310 Willie Nelson Blvd. acl-live.com. — P.B.
Thursday: A Celebration of the Late Great Daniel Johnston. A month after the former Austin songwriter’s death at age 58, this tribute show will feature mostly local acts performing his songs, much as they did at this same venue on his birthday in 2018. A final lineup is still in the works, but confirmed so far are Kathy McCarty, Jad Fair, Kramer, Moving Panoramas and Walker Lukens. $15. 8 p.m. 912 Red River St. mohawkaustin.com. — P.B.
Thursday: Northside Amplified at the Domain Northside. On the heels of Black Fret’s free series of outdoor summer shows at the Long Center comes another public event from the local music patron organization. Austin acts Mobley, Swimming With Bears, Shy Beast and the Texas KGB will perform at the sprawling shopping center and residential community that has become a central gathering point for North Austin residents. The free show runs from 6 to 10 p.m.; a meet-and-greet with band members at Capital One Cafe happens at 3 p.m. 11821 Rock Rose Ave. blackfret.org. — P.B.
