Here's what's happening in the Live Music Capital of the World this week.
OUR TOP PICKS
Friday: Boogie Kings with Marcia Ball at Antone's. Louisiana masters of swamp-pop and blue-eyed soul since the 1950s, the Boogie Kings were special to the late Clifford Antone, founder of the iconic Austin venue that bears his name. "The Boogie Kings is the band that inspired me," he testified in a quote passed along to us by his sister, Susan Antone. "That's the standard, still to this day, by which I judge music; that's why I do what I do." Which makes their appearance as part of the club's 44th anniversary celebration quite fitting — especially with Austin's own Louisiana import, Marcia Ball, joining them for the occasion. $15-$20. 8 p.m. 305 E. Fifth St. antonesnightclub.com. — P.B.
Friday: Ben Böhmer (Live) at Parish. Years before he began experimenting with synthesizers and electronic music, the progressive house DJ from Berlin played piano and trumpet. His strong musical grounding comes across on tracks that weave poignant melodies with body-moving rhythms to create rich electronic compositions that move the body and the heart. $10. 10 p.m. doors. theparishaustin.com. — D.S.S.
Friday: Amyl & the Sniffers at Barracuda. This Australian glam-punk outfit, fronted by charismatic firebrand Amy Taylor, lived up to South by Southwest hype-makers' predictions with a series of explosive performances at the music festival in March, months before their debut album was scheduled to drop. With “Gacked on Anger,” a collection of frenetic barroom bruisers (most of which clock in under three minutes) earning critical raves, they’ve been destroying stages across the country and around the globe. Muejeres Podridas and Hotmom open. $15. 9 p.m. doors. 611 E. Seventh St. barracudaaustin.com — D.S.S.
Friday: Austin Boogie Fest at Sahara Lounge. Local DJ collective Austin Boogie Crew, featuring celebrated party-rockers Chorizo Funk, Chicken George, Danbone and Spence, have been keeping Austin dance floors hot with all-vinyl parties since 2011. They also run an indie imprint that specializes in underground funk and boogie sounds. The inaugural Austin Boogie Fest is a live music showcase celebrating modern funk vibes with West Coast groovers XL Middleton and Moniquea. Local duo the Vapor Caves will also perform, as will the crew. $10. 9 p.m. doors. 1413 Webberville Road. saharalounge.com. — D.S.S.
Saturday: Carson McHone at White Horse. The native-Austinite singer-songwriter has at times been easy to catch in town every few weeks. But that’s not been the case for much of the past year, as she’s been touring consistently to support last fall’s “Carousel.” Playing the White Horse is a back-home gig in multiple respects, given that her parents co-own the place. But it’s also the perfect venue to hear her songs that walk the line between trad-country and indie spirit. Warm Sugar open; Tender Things play later. $5. 9 p.m. 500 Comal St. thewhitehorseaustin.com. — P.B.
Monday: Rosie Flores at Waterloo Records. A cornerstone of Austin’s roots-music scene since the 1980s, the San Antonio native is classified as “a rockabilly and country music artist” if you look her up on Wikipedia. But her new record “Simple Case of the Blues” reminds that her range reaches well beyond those limits. On the album, Flores trades guitar leads with Kenny Vaughan, a major talent with two decades in Marty Stuart’s band; Vaughan co-produced with bassist Dave Roe and Austin ace-in-the-hole Charlie Sexton. Flores co-wrote three of the album’s 11 songs, but mostly she serves as a first-class interpreter of tunes by artists ranging from mid-20th-century R&B standouts Roy Brown and Wynona Carr to rock ’n’ roll pioneers Lieber & Stoller to honky-tonker Dwight Yoakam. Free. 5 p.m. 600 N. Lamar Blvd. waterloorecords.com. — P.B.
Wednesday: Blues on the Green with Ben Kweller at Zilker Park. In 2013, while on vacation in a rustic rental cabin in New Mexico, indie rocker Ben Kweller and his family suffered acute carbon monoxide poisoning that hospitalized the singer-songwriter, his wife and their two young children. In an announcement about his new music, Kweller said the terrifying near-death experience wasn’t the only reason he went into a five-year “hibernation,” but he battled depression and considered leaving the music industry in the aftermath. He kept writing and eventually returned to recording. Kweller released a snappy new single, “Heart Attack Kid,” in February with new album “Circuit Boredom” promised for later this year. Como Las Movies opens. Free. Concert starts at 8 p.m., but organizers recommend early arrival to secure a good spot to spread out your blanket and set up lawn chairs. Limited parking is available on site for $15. Parking opens at 6 p.m. and event organizers recommend you purchase a pass online in advance, because it usually sells out. 2100 Barton Springs Road. acl-radio.com/blues19. — D.S.S.
Thursday: Recording Academy Texas Chapter 25th anniversary at ACL Live. The organization that presents the Grammys marks a quarter-century of its Lone Star branch with a remarkably diverse lineup of nearly a dozen acts, including Tex-Mex legends Flaco Jimenez and Little Joe Hernandez; Houston rappers Bun B and Paul Wall; and Austin roots-music mainstays Marcia Ball and Asleep at the Wheel. Also on the bill are pop stars Hanson from Oklahoma (which the Texas chapter also represents); hit-making Austin country trio Midland' San Antonio conjunto fixture Los Texmaniacs; and gospel singers Yolanda Adams and Brian Courtney Wilson. $45-$65. 8:30 p.m. 310 Willie Nelson Blvd. acl-live.com. — P.B.
