Cumbia festival, Hole in the Wall milestone, more music in Austin this week

Here's what's happening in the Live Music Capital of the World this week.

Friday: Lion Babe at Come and Take It Live. “Cosmic Wind,” the latest from singer Jillian Hervey and producer Lucas Goodman’s nu-soul duo, mixes wistful slow-burners with chilled-out club grooves on a breezy release that feels like summertime. $20. 8 p.m. 2015 E. Riverside Drive. — D.S.S.

Saturday: Josh Ritter & the Royal City Band, Amanda Shires at Paramount Theatre. New England folk-rocker Ritter is one of the sharpest lyricists of the 21st century, so it was no surprise when he became a best-selling novelist, as well, about a decade ago. The fresh news from Ritter world is a highly anticipated album he recorded with Americana superstar Jason Isbell producing. Fitting, then, that Isbell’s wife, Amanda Shires, who released one of 2018’s best singer-songwriter albums, is opening the show. $35. 8 p.m. 713 Congress Ave. — P.B.

Saturday: WEPA Fest at Kenny Dorham’s Backyard. A folkloric music form that originated in the Caribbean region of Colombia, cumbia has grown into one of the most popular urban music genres in Latin America. WEPA Fest, founded in 2017 by Colombian American Austinite Kiko Villamizar, examines cumbia’s roots and evolution. This year’s fest is co-headlined by traditional Colombian act La Banda de Nayo and excellent NYC-based tropical futurists Combo Chimbita. Son de la Provincia, Fabuloso Sexteto Caracha, Villamizar and more will also perform. $25. 1 p.m. 1106 E. 11th St. — D.S.S.

Sunday: Soul of a Musician series 200th show at Sam’s Town Point. This free weekly series presented by St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church usually happens at Threadgill’s and features a single artist. To celebrate 200 shows, organizer Merrill Wade has put together a special triple bill with blues-rock duo Peterson Brothers (7:30 p.m.), indie-pop band Cotton Mather (6 p.m.) and singer-songwriter Erin Ivey (5 p.m.) for an extended evening at one of deep South Austin’s coolest venues. 2115 Allred Drive. — P.B.

Sunday: Father’s Day Showcase with James McMurtry and Curtis McMurtry, Jon Dee Graham and William Harries Graham at Cosmic. The McMurtrys and the Grahams are like the Continental Club cartel, having locked down Wednesdays there for most of this millennium. But for this special occasion, they’ll take the show farther down South Congress, pairing off into father-son teams on a bill that also promises other special guests. (I wouldn’t expect Willie  and Lukas, but these days there are plenty of family affairs in town that could turn up.) Free. 6 p.m. 121 Pickle Road. — P.B.

Monday: Hole in the Wall 45th anniversary 45rpm single release at Hole in the Wall. Country band Mike & the Moonpies and indie-pop performer PR Newman have teamed up on a split-single featuring two big hits by bands that got started at the Hole — Fastball’s “The Way” and Timbuk3’s “The Future’s So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades,” respectively — to help the UT campus-area joint mark another milestone year. They’ll headline a solid Monday bill that kicks off a full week of shows featuring Hole favorites (see additional listings below). $15-$20. 8 p.m. 2538 Guadalupe St. — P.B.

Wednesday: Tiny Desk Contest on the Road at 3Ten. Each year, National Public Radio asks unsigned artists around the country to submit a video for a chance to perform a Tiny Desk Concert at NPR headquarters in Washington, D.C. Of thousands who entered this year, Quinn Christopherson, a Athabaskan and Inupiaq singer-songwriter, rose to the top. In a one-shot video in front of a painting of Mt. Denali at the Anchorage Museum, he performed the acoustic track “Erase Me,” a searing statement of self that chronicles his journey as a transgender man learning to harness the power of his voice. NPR folks will be on hand with Tiny Desk swag and a Tiny Desk photo booth. $10. 7 p.m. 310 W. Willie Nelson Blvd. — D.S.S.
