Who's your Hootie? Betty, the Blowfish and more music this week

Peter Blackstock
Max Frost, who played Blues on the Green in 2016, is back for another appearance at ACL Radio's popular free music series in Zilker Park on Wednesday. [JAY JANNER/AMERICAN-STATESMAN]

Friday: Betty Who, Loote at Mohawk outdoor. Austin Pride organizers moved the city's official celebration to August a few years back, but around the country, many LGBTQ Pride events take place in June to commemorate the Stonewall riots, a 1969 demonstration against a police raid of an NYC nightclub that many cite as the beginning of the modern gay rights movement. Celebrate with a gay club fave who released an ebullient cover of the “Queer Eye” theme last year. She’s touring to support her new album “Betty,” a delightful collection of slinky dance-pop, and she’s donating a dollar from each ticket sold to the Trevor Project, a nonprofit that works on suicide prevention for LGBTQ youth. (Aly and AJ, who perform at the venue Saturday, are also supporting the Trevor Project.) $26-$99. 8 p.m. doors. 912 Red River St. — D.S.S.

Friday: Black Fret Summer Sessions kickoff at Long Center Lawn & Terrace. The local music patron group is launching this new series of free shows featuring recipients of Black Fret grants. Most of Black Fret’s events throughout the year are members-only affairs; these shows are a welcome opportunity to raise awareness of the organization’s efforts to support Austin music. On board for the inaugural show are Bright Light Social Hour, Swimming With Bears, Carson McHone and Akina Adderley. 6 p.m. 701 W. Riverside Drive. — P.B.

Friday-Sunday: Austin Terror Fest at Empire, Barracuda. Guitars will scream, drums will beat and heads will bang as the noise music fest blasts into town for its third go round. Headliners include black metal titans Goatwhore, French post-metal act Alcest and grindcore act Pig Destroyer. Stoner metal will be well represented at the festival by a host of acts including Church of Misery, Bongzilla and Bongripper, who will be playing their first Texas show at the festival. Individual show tickets: $25-$40. Festival pass: $150. — D.S.S.

Sunday: Thundercat at Emo’s. The jazz fusion specialist with mind-boggling bass chops came into the limelight a few years back for his Kendrick Lamar collaborations. His technical prowess, musical sensitivity and unbridled creativity helped shape the Cali rapper’s brilliant 2015 opus “To Pimp a Butterfly.” He logged his own hits with the excellent 2017 album “Drunk” which includes a swoony collaboration with Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins. $25-$30. 7 p.m. doors. 2015 E. Riverside Drive. — D.S.S.

Monday: Duff McKagan, Shooter Jennings at Scoot Inn. He’ll be back in October for the Austin City Limits Music Fest playing bass with headliner Guns N’ Roses, but at the moment, McKagan is touring behind “Tenderness,” his first solo album in 20 years. Produced by Shooter Jennings, who’s playing in McKagan’s band on this tour as well as opening the shows, the Americana-leaning record finds McKagan focusing partly on social issues such as homelessness ("Cold Outside") and school shootings ("Parkland"). $38.65. 6:30 p.m. doors. 1308 E. Fourth St. — P.B.

Tuesday: Jamila Woods at Barracuda. On her new album “Legacy! Legacy!”, Woods inhabits the lives of artists, activists and cultural instigators whom she considers heroes. She fights to own her sexuality as Betty Davis, builds on the gut-wrenching message of a Sonia Sanchez poem about slavery and explores musical adventurer Sun Ra’s cosmic jazz universe. In the process, she weaves political and personal into a powerful work that emphasizes the relevance of these past leaders’ messages in modern American. $15-$55. 7 p.m. doors.— D.S.S.

Thursday: Hootie & the Blowfish at Austin360 Amphitheater. A quarter-century ago, Darius Rucker and his South Carolina bandmates hit the pause-button on the grunge era with a classic rock album that went on to sell more than 20 million copies. They’ll play hits from “Cracked Rear View” and other favorites on their first tour in more than a decade, perhaps also working in a song or two from Rucker’s fruitful run as a country singer in recent years. Canada’s Barenaked Ladies, another 1990s rock-radio fixture, open. $29.50-$250. 7:30 p.m. 9201 Circuit of the Americas Blvd. — P.B.

Thursday: Lonely Island at ACL Live. For a seven-year period that began in 2005, Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone’s music and comedy trio kept “Saturday Night Live” fresh with hilarious hits like “I’m on a Boat,” “YOLO” and “I Just Had Sex.” (They also made a compelling case for presenting that special lady in your life with your, ahem, junk in a box.) For summer 2019, they’re taking their wild and often obscene stage show on their first ever multi-city tour. $45-$125. 8 p.m. 310 Willie Nelson Blvd. — D.S.S.
