Grupo at Little Darlin', Chvrches vs. the Church, and more music this week

Tickets are sold out to night one of Chvrches 2-night stand at ACL Live, but at press time, there are still tickets to the Monday show. [SCOTT MOORE/STATESMAN]

Friday: Walker Lukens album release at Mohawk outdoor. About his new release, “Adult,” Lukens says he “tried to make a record about how absurd it has felt to be alive over the past few years.” The album, his third full length, is an appealing collection that mixes electro funk dance jams with textured pop meditations loaded with grandiose choruses and buoyed by swooning harmonies. Shy Beast, Sego and Zettajoule open. $15-$18. 7 p.m. doors. 912 Red River St. — D.S.S.

Saturday: The Little Darlin’ anniversary party with Grupo Fantasma. The Southside bar and eatery — run by Austin entertainment lifers striving to preserve our city’s quirky culture — celebrates its third birthday with a full weekend of festivities. The party kicks off Friday with live music by True Widow and Crypt Trip and continues Saturday morning with a Bluegrass Brunch. But the main event is a free evening performance from the world-class cumbia funk ensemble Grupo Fantasma. With an excellent new album out, the Grammy-winning ensemble just did an East Coast stint playing prestigious venues such as NYC’s Kennedy Center and they leave in early May for a tour of the western U.S. This is a great opportunity to send them off in style. 6507 Circle S Road. — D.S.S.

Saturday: Medusa at Flamingo Cantina. Local promotion house Hip Hop Mecca has been bringing the best of independent hip-hop to Austin since 1997. Over the years, they’ve fostered a strong connection between the ATX and Cali underground scenes and this show, featuring the self-proclaimed Gansta Goddess, who found her voice in L.A.’s Project Blowed scene in the ‘90s, keeps the old school vibes alive. Mista Swift & Rock Soul Collective and Blakchyl from Mindz of a Different Kind open. $10. 9 p.m. doors. 515 E Sixth St. — D.S.S.

Sunday: 10,000 Maniacs at 3Ten. Singer Mary Ramsey has now fronted this upstate New York outfit for 25 years, about twice as long as their run with original singer and songwriter Natalie Merchant (who left for a solo career in the mid-1990s). Merchant’s material still rightfully remains prominent in the band’s live sets, but Ramsey — who joined the band after making a duo album with original Maniacs rhythm guitarist John Lombardo — excels in the central role, also playing viola. All other original members are still there, save for lead guitarist Rob Buck, who died in 2000. $52-$55. 8 p.m. 310 Willie Nelson Blvd. — P.B.

Sunday: Sunset Sessions with A Giant Dog, Go Fever at Eberly Rooftop. The third of four installments in this concert series at a relatively new Austin restaurant, Sunset Sessions goes all-out indie-rock for April. A Giant Dog has been one of the city’s best bands for several years, with two albums on renowned North Carolina indie label Merge. Go Fever was our Austin360 Artist of the Month in February and has been touring quite a bit since the release of their new EP “Daydream Hawker.” The $43 ticket price includes valet parking and one cocktail, beer or glass of wine. A portion of the proceeds benefits the SIMS Foundation. 6 p.m. doors. 615 S. Lamar Blvd. — P.B

Monday: Chvrches at ACL Live and the Church at 3Ten. Coincidence or fate? The touring-schedule stars aligned for this amusing upstairs-downstairs pairing at the big-theater and small-club venues operated under the ACL Live umbrella. Scottish indie-pop band Chvrches, veterans of several ACL Fests and South by Southwests (including this past March), are big enough now to play two nights in the big room; Sunday’s show is sold out, but tickets are still available for Monday. The Church, 1980s Australian pop charmers of “Under the Milky Way” fame, sold out a Saturday show in the downstairs 3Ten room, but they’ve added this Monday show that made for the perfect Churchy McChvrchface booking coup. ACL Live: $41-$51, 8 p.m. (Cherry Glazer opens). 3Ten: $44-$99, 8 p.m. (no opener). 310 Willie Nelson Blvd. and (And, hey, if you can’t make it to either one of these, there’s always top-flight local jazz with the Church on Monday band at the Continental Gallery.) — P.B.

Thursday: Little Mazarn album release at Cactus Cafe and Kim Simpson album release at Townsend. You could say that both Little Mazarn and Kim Simpson play folk music, and that would be accurate, but the sound of their respective new records is very different. Little Mazarn, the duo of singer-songwriter-guitarist Lindsey Verrill and saw player Jeff Johnston, is a mesmerizingly minimalist soundscape of enchanting originals plus a revelatory reimagination of Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing in the Dark.” Simpson, host of KOOP radio’s “International Folk Bazaar” show, plays everything from mandolin and tin whistle to instruments from Finland (kantele), Bolivia (charango) and Morocco (oud) on “The Comets Swish Their Tails,” a fascinatingly varied 15-song journey. Cactus: $10, 8:30 p.m. (Will Johnson opens), 2247 Guadalupe St., Townsend: $10-$12, 7:30 p.m., 718 Congress Ave., — P.B.
