Catch up with Dale Watson on our latest podcast
In the latest episode of our "I Love You So Much" podcast, we talked with country troubadour Dale Watson, a longtime presence in Austin who recently relocated part-time to Memphis, Tenn. Watson still performs regularly at local haunts such as the Continental Club, the Broken Spoke and the Highball, but he's found a second home of sorts in the town that gave rise to the 1950s heyday of Elvis Presley and other American music legends.
Watson recorded his new Red House Records album, "Call Me Lucky," at the city's famed Sun Studios, and he brought in greats such as W.S. Holland, longtime drummer for Johnny Cash.
Watson has also moved his annual Ameripolitan Music Awards show to Memphis, though he doesn't rule out the possibility of having it again someday in Austin. The show, which honors musicians in traditional categories such as western swing, honky tonk, rockabilly and outlaw music, started in 2014 in an Interstate 35 hotel ballroom before moving to the Paramount Theatre for several years.
