Here's what's happening in the Live Music Capital of the World this week.
Saturday: Chingona Fest at Hops and Grain. For the second year, the festival celebrating powerful Latinas takes over the parking lot of the East Austin brewery for a day of music. Oakland outfit La Misa Negra, who play a mix of cumbia and Afro-Latin sounds, lead a bill that also includes Austin’s ace Selena tribute act, Bidi Bidi Banda; rapidly rising rockers Tiarra Girls; and the all-female Mariachi Las Coronelas from San Antonio. The event will also feature Latina food and arts vendors from all over the country. $30. Gates at 11:30 a.m. 622 N. Pleasant Valley Road. chingonafesttx.com — D.S.S.
Sunday: Milk Carton Kids at Paramount Theatre. Kenneth Pattengale and Joey Ryan have made magic on their albums as a duo without accompanists. But on last year’s Grammy-nominated “All the Things That I Did and All the Things That I Didn’t Do,” one of the things they did is welcome additional players into the studio for the first time. Recording in Nashville with producer Joe Henry, they brought in aces including guitarist Russ Pahl, drummer Jay Bellerose and Wilco’s Pat Sansone. Still, the essence of their art centers on acoustic guitars and their vocal harmonies. Willie Watson opens. $30-$50. 7 p.m. 713 Congress Ave. austintheatre.org. — P.B.
Monday: Lucinda Williams at ACL Live. Is “Car Wheels on a Gravel Road” the best album Williams ever made? Personally, I’d lean toward her 1988 self-titled album, which put her on the map as a major American singer-songwriter. But “Car Wheels” was without question a major breakthrough for the occasional Austinite, netting her a Grammy and a gold record. On a tour to celebrate its 20th anniversary, she’s playing the album in full, along with a second set of career-wide selections. $39-$49. 8 p.m. 310 Willie Nelson Blvd. acl-live.com. — P.B.
Tuesday: Haiku D'Etat at Flamingo Cantina. The supergroup of L.A. indie hip-hop lifers released their second album, “Coup De Theatre,” 15 years ago. Last year, rappers Myka 9 and Aceyalone of Freestyle Fellowship and Abstract Rude of ATU released a compilation album, “Haiku De Theatre...Best of Haiku.” Now they’re celebrating the anniversary with their first tour together in five years. The show will feature a joint Haiku set, plus solo performances by the artists. $12. 8 p.m. doors. 515 E. 6th St. flamingocantina.com — D.S.S.
Tuesday through April 13: Southern Culture on the Skids at Continental Club. You know what it means when these Carolina titans of the trailer park hit SoCo for their annual weeklong run: The Lonestar Round Up is in town. The hot rod gala at the Travis County Expo Center doesn’t begin until April 12, but early arrivals get three nights of pre-parties with SCOTS and a motley crew of openers: Benny Peters on Tuesday; the Woggles on Wednesday; Barfield and Casper Rawls on Thursday; Paladins on Friday; and High Roller and Messer Chups on Saturday. $15 nightly. The star attraction takes the stage at midnight each night, with openers preceding at 10 p.m. or earlier. 1315 S. Congress Ave. continentalclub.com. — P.B.
Thursday: SXSW Hangover VIII at Mohawk indoor. For the eighth year in a row, local heavies LNS Crew will host an ATX hip hop blowout at the Mohawk. The roster for this year’s event includes LNS standouts Kydd Jones, Tank Washington and Cory Kendrix, who’s in town from Denver for the event. Young upstart CP Looney is also on the bill, and for hungry hip hop heads in the house, the crew is springing for free tacos. 9 p.m. doors. 912 Red River St. mohawkaustin.com — D.S.S.
