Austin360 On The Record: Grupo Fantasma, White Denim

Peter Blackstock
Grupo Fantasma's latest album "American Music: Vol. VII," which ranges from funk to cumbia, features multiple special guests including Ozomatli and Locos Por Juana.

Grupo Fantasma, “American Music: Vol. VII” (Blue Corn). For the seventh album of its two-decade career, the Grammy-winning Latin funk ensemble “teamed up with noted Miami-based Colombian producer Carlos ‘El Loco’ Bedoya,” American-Statesman/Austin360 writer Nancy Flores notes. “With his help, Grupo Fantasma collaborated on the politically charged song ‘The Wall’ with Ozomatli and Grammy-nominated band Locos Por Juana of Miami. The band recorded the album at Sonic Ranch in the Texas border town of Tornillo. The town later became the site of a tent facility housing thousands of migrant children. Other songs on the album include the English-language ‘LT,’ which features the dhol drumming of Indian fusion band Red Baraat’s Sunny Jain. And for the first time, the band brings an outside vocalist, Tomar Williams of Tomar & the FCs, to the spotlight in the boogaloo tune ‘Let Me Be,’ featuring backup vocalists the Soul Supporters.” Read Flores’ full story on Grupo Fantasma online at and in Friday’s American-Statesman. Release show March 29 at Mohawk outdoor. Here’s the track “The Wall”:

White Denim, “Side Effects” (City Slang). The second album in less than a year from the jam-heavy ensemble, following last summer's "Performance," finds anchors James Petralli and Steve Terebecki continuing to rotate various supporting players through the lineup to flesh out their freewheeling sound.
