Here's what's going on in the Live Music Capital of the World this week.
OUR TOP PICKS
Friday-March 30: Rodeo Austin at Travis County Exposition Center. The annual event kicked off last weekend just at South by Southwest was wrapping up, but it rolls for a full two weeks, through this weekend and into the next with shows every night. Highlights include the great 1970s balladeer Ronnie Milsap on Sunday, 1990s country star Martina McBride on Tuesday and members of the pop-soul family group the Jacksons on Wednesday. Tickets range from $20 to $175; headline acts follow the 7 p.m. rodeo action at Luedecke Arena (3 p.m. on Sundays), but there’s also music by local and regional acts on two smaller stages. 9100 Decker Lake Road. rodeoaustin.com.
Saturday: Jerry Jeff Walker Texas Bash at Paramount Theatre. Ol’ Scamp Walker turned 76 last weekend, and he’ll celebrate with his annual bash at the historic downtown theater. Since surviving a serious bout with cancer in 2017, Walker returned with “It’s About Time,” his first album in a decade last year. $40-$75. 8 p.m. 713 Congress Ave. austintheatre.org.
Sunday: Irish Invasion with Andrea Magee & Pat Byrne at Saxon Pub. We caught this gig a couple of weeks ago and can verify it’s one of the hottest new residencies to hit Austin in years. Belfast native Magee, of the local duo Beat Root Revival, and Byrne, a recent Irish import, benefit from the ace support of Austin’s Rich Brotherton, who’s well-schooled in the sounds of their home country. The 10:30 p.m. show is a huge bargain at $5, capping a great Sunday at the Saxon that also includes the Resentments’ renowned residency (7:30 p.m., $10) plus afternoon sets by John Gaar (5:30 p.m., $5) and Sam Baker (3 p.m., $10). 1320 S. Lamar Blvd. thesaxonpub.com.
Wednesday: Grupo Fantasma at Waterloo Records. “American Music, Vol. VII” is the title of the latest record by the heralded local Latin funk ensemble, following six albums released from 2002 to 2016. They took a long break after 2010’s Grammy-winning “El Existential,” but a reconstituted 2016 release, “Problemas,” marked a revival that continues with their second set for Texas label Blue Corn. 5 p.m. Free. 600 N. Lamar Blvd. waterloorecords.com.
Thursday: Buddy Guy, Jimmie Vaughan at ACL Live. A lot has been happening in this downtown building for living-legend bluesman Guy lately. Last year, he taped his latest episode of “Austin City Limits” there, and this fall he’ll return to be inducted into the program’s Hall of Fame. You can pretty much count on two things for sure at this show: One, he’ll be decked out in his trademark polka dots, and two, at some point, he and his cordless guitar will delight lucky attendees by popping up right alongside their seats in the aisles, somewhere in the venue. A huge bonus: Austin’s own blues guitar master Vaughan opens the show. $49-$79. 8 p.m. 310 Willie Nelson Blvd. acl-live.com.
Thursday: David Ball & That Carolina Sound at Stateside at the Paramount. Teaming country hitmaker Ball with Austin cousins Warren and Marshall Hood, this show largely revives the beloved music that Warren’s father Champ Hood made with Ball and Walter Hyatt in the 1970s and early 1980s. The South Carolinians made Austin home during their heyday and created magic with an acoustic blend of country, folk, jazz and swing that influenced major artists who followed in their footsteps including Lyle Lovett and Shawn Colvin. An unforgettable show last year at Saxon Pub sparked a move to a larger venue this time; a March 29 date sold out quickly, motivating the addition of this second show. $25-$48. 8 p.m. 719 Congress Ave. austintheatre.org.
