Austin360 On The Record: Joe Jacksons, Guma, more
OUT THIS WEEK
Joe Jacksons, “Forever” (White Couch). Led by former Weary Boys frontman Mario Matteoli, the Joe Jacksons (no musical relation whatsoever to the British pop master) serve up nine tracks of mostly down-and-dirty rock & roll on their full-length debut. Bassist Zac Bryant (Sounds Del Mar) and drummer Rob Bacak (Crooks) give steady rhythm support to Matteoli’s guitar crunch, with guests including Cayce Matteoli on two cuts and Black Joe Lewis on the concluding track, “Let Me Eat Your Breakfast.” Paul Minor produced the album, which was engineered by Matt Hubbard at the Hub studio. Release show March 22 at ABGB. Here’s the track “Last Night With Jesus”:
Vanessa Lively, “I Am” EP. The local singer-songwriter blends folk and world music on this four-track release that features both fully arranged and spare acoustic versions of two original tunes. Playing March 23 at Austin Central Library; release show March 29 at Baxter House. Here’s the video for “Violets in the Night”:
Guma, self-titled. The second release from this intriguing ensemble led by T.J. Masters, host of KOOP Radio’s “Small Cool World” program, was recorded in Masters’ former New York home base and in Southern California, with musicians including drummer Tabor Allen of Los Angeles indie-rockers Cherry Glazerr and longtime Austin multi-instrumentalist Danny Levin. It’s hard to peg exactly what kind of music Guma is making, and that’s a good thing; there’s elements of soul, jazz, pop and more in these cool grooves. Here’s the track “Floor Models”:
Magna Carda, “Ladee” EP. Five-song release from the hip-hop duo of Megz Kelli and Dougie Do, one of our 2018 Austin360 Artists of the Month, with guests including Mecca, Jonny Huggins, Jay Luse and Ari Burns. Here’s the opening track, “Breathe”:
