OUR TOP PICKS
Friday: Robyn Hitchcock at 3Ten. Someday we’ll look back on these years, decades even, of getting to see this larger-than-life talent playing in midsized clubs with a reverent awe and wonder. Hitchcock has played the big venues, too — he opened for R.E.M. at the Erwin Center back in 1989, and his major-label heyday included theater tours with his band the Egyptians — so it’s not like he’s gone unappreciated. But in his autumn years (he turned 65 in 2018), Hitchcock has remained as sharp-witted and engaging a performer as ever. And that’s saying a lot. $24.50-$29.50. 8:30 p.m. 310 Willie Nelson Blvd. 3tenaustin.com. — P.B.
Friday: Magna Carda at Austin Eastciders Collaboratory. Our favorite purveyors of fermented fruit beverages continue the Final Friday Showcase series at their tasting room with a performance from Austin’s excellent live band hip-hop act. According to the cider mill’s Facebook page, the free events are a way of “thanking the local community for making Austin the weird and wonderful place it is.” Dogs and kids are welcome. Free. 8 p.m. 979 Springdale Road, Ste. 130. magnacardamusic.com. — D.S.S.
Saturday: Wood & Wire at Sam’s Town Point. December brought a double barrel of good news for this hard-working local bluegrass outfit, with a Grammy nomination for their 2018 album “North of Despair” and a major grant from local patron group Black Fret. They’ll play both South by Southwest and Old Settler’s Music Festival in the coming months, but here’s a chance to catch them in a great setting, the south end’s funkiest off-the-beaten-path music haven. The Frauleins open. $12. 8 p.m. 2115 Allred Drive. samstownpointatx.com. — P.B.
Sunday: Lesly Reynaga at Waterloo Records. Mexican native Lesly Reynaga recorded her EP, “Dual Passport,” while racing to complete her citizenship test in time to vote in the 2018 midterm election. Consequently, immigration emerges as a dominant theme in the vibrant collection of Spanglish pop songs from the former featured soloist of the University of Texas Mariachi ensemble. She tempers her own story of personal triumph by shedding light on the harrowing struggles of those who aren’t fortunate enough to go through the legal naturalization process. We’ll be on hand to introduce our January Artist of the Month. Free. 5 p.m. 600 N. Lamar Blvd. waterloorecords.com. — D.S.S.
Sunday: “Resemblements” at Saxon Pub. More than two decades into a residency begun by the late Stephen Bruton, the Resentments have rotated many of Austin’s best musicians through their lineup over the years. When Fastball’s Miles Zuniga, a Resentments fixture for most of this decade, invited A-list guitarists David Grissom and Rich Brotherton to join him in a trio setup last fall, they jokingly dubbed it the Resemblements. They all apparently enjoyed it enough to give it another go; here’s hoping they’ll make it an occasionally recurring endeavor. $10. 7:30 p.m. 1320 S. Lamar Blvd. thesaxonpub.com. — P.B.
Thursday: Peter Murphy’s “40 Years of Bauhaus” at Paramount Theatre. The goth pioneer coaxed Bauhaus bassist David J to join him on this Ruby Celebration tour, adding to the show’s dark nostalgia for fans of the influential British band. On the tour, which wound through Europe before hitting the States, the band has been playing Bauhaus’ 1980 debut album, “In the Flat Field,” in its entirety, followed by an extensive encore set packed with Bauhaus classics. $35-$40. 8 p.m. 713 Congress Ave. austintheatre.org. — D.S.S.
Thursday: Hunt Sales Memorial album release at Antone’s. A drummer who’s lived mostly under the radar in Austin for decades despite tenures with major stars David Bowie, Iggy Pop and Todd Rundgren, Sales steps out front with a new record that ranges from the swaggering rock 'n' roll of opener “Here I Go Again” to the more nuanced balladry of “One Day.” The “memorial” added to his name may be an ironic reference to the 64-year-old’s unlikely recovery from what he says was a 40-year heroin habit. His experiences inform hard-boiled songs such as “I Can’t Stop,” “Sorry Baby” and “Angel of Darkness.” The Ruins open. $15. 8 p.m. 305 E. Sixth St. antonesnightclub.com. — P.B.
