OUR TOP PICKS
Friday: 7 Minutes in Heaven: A Celebration of Esme Barrera at Mohawk outdoor. In 2012, the Austin scene was shaken by the murder of Esme Barrera, a vibrant special education teacher and local music superfan. Friends will gather to celebrate her legacy at this benefit show featuring sets from Cigarettes After Sex, Ted Leo, Jim Ward and more. Barrera was a passionate supporter of Girls Rock Camp Austin, where she volunteered as a counselor each summer. To honor her, Girls Rock affiliates have joined forces with her friends and family to launch a pilot program for a Girls Rock Camp in Barrera's hometown, El Paso. With money raised from the show and a GoFundMe page managed by Barrera's sister, the group hopes to provide scholarships for 25 girls, transgender and non-binary youth to attend the camp free of charge. $20. 6 p.m. doors. 912 Red River St. mohawkaustin.com. — D.S.S.
Friday: Austin Music Foundation & KUTX present The Next at Antone’s. This gig presents a wonderfully diverse cross-section of Austin sounds. Standouts on the stacked bill include bedroom R&B singer Alesia Lani, powerful blues-rockers Kalu & the Electric Joint, dreamy electro-pop artist Shy Beast and Latin rhythm kingpins Superfonicos. Otis Wilkins, Aaron Stephens and Western Youth round out the bill. All seven artists recently graduated from the AMF’s Artist Development Program, a seven-month training intensive designed to help promising artists take their careers to the next level. Catch these rising talents now and brag to your friends about how you saw them first. $20. 8 p.m. 305 E. Fifth St. antonesnightclub.com. — D.S.S.
Saturday: Terry Allen at Paramount Theatre. A relatively new but very welcome tradition, Lubbock-raised Allen’s January show at Austin’s old-faithful theater promises to be every bit as good as the highly praised shows of the past couple years — and maybe better, given that New Orleans singer Shannon McNally is part of the ensemble this time. She joins a world-class cast that includes Charlie Sexton on guitar, Glenn Fukunaga on bass and Lloyd Maines on pedal steel. Allen has called Santa Fe, N.M., home for three decades now, but his ties to Austin (where his sons Bukka and Bale both live) are deep, and his music remains deeply steeped in Texas lore. $20-$39.50. 8 p.m. 713 Congress Ave. austintheatre.org. — P.B.
Saturday: Cup of Ambition: a Dolly Parton Birthday Bash at Barracuda. A nexus of the Red River District’s punk/indie scene isn’t exactly where you’d expect to find a tribute show for country legend Parton, but then Dolly’s music has always transcended boundaries. To honor her 73rd birthday, more than a dozen Austin musicians will play her songs, including Jackie Venson, David Ramirez, Melat, Walker Lukens, Carson McHone, Kalu James, Elizabeth McQueen, Acey Monaro of Go Fever, Mariclaire Glaeser of Shy Beast, Cory Reinisch of Harvest Thieves, Sara Houser of Lowin, and Leslie Sisson & Cara Tillman of Moving Panoramas. Proceeds go to Front Steps, the nonprofit that manages the Austin Resource Center for the Homeless in the Red River District. $10-$15. 9 p.m. 611 E. Seventh St. barracudaaustin.com. — P.B.
Sunday: Nagavalli album release at One World Theatre. The title track of “Immersion,” the new record from this Austin singer who grew up in Mumbai, India, is 49 minutes long. “Immersion” doesn’t fit into standard preconceptions of albums, and that’s part of what makes it fascinating, along with Nagavalli’s enchanting exploration of genres well outside the realm of most Western Hemisphere music. Self-described as “Eastern soul with delicate touches of pop, rock, trance and pure Eastern tradition,” Nagavalli’s art is unlike any other you’ll hear in Austin. Special guests for this show include Patrice Pike, Oliver Rajamani, Ginger Leigh and sitarist Indrajit Banerjee. $35-$55. 7 p.m. 7701 Bee Caves Road. oneworldtheatre.org. — P.B.
Monday: MLK Celebration at Huston-Tillotson University. The musical roster for this year’s community celebration honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King gets an extra shot of sizzling soul this year as vocal powerhouse Tameca Jones joins a lineup that also includes rapper/scholar Bavu Blakes, Pat G. and the reunion of local funk-a-teers, Les and the Funk Mob. The event also includes food vendors, booths from community groups and kids’ activities. 11:15 a.m. 900 Chicon St. mlkcelebration.com. — D.S.S.
Tuesday: “Hi, How Are You” Day at ACL Live. A relatively small but utterly charming celebration of renowned songwriter Daniel Johnston’s birthday last year at the Mohawk, this event moves to a much bigger stage for its second go-round, with an impressive lineup to match. Indie heavyweights the Flaming Lips, Yo La Tengo, Built to Spill and Bob Mould head a cast that also includes locals the Black Angels and Bob Schneider. Proceeds support the Hi, How Are You Project, which seeks “to end the stigma around mental health conversations,” per the show’s promo material. $49-$79. 7 p.m. 310 Willie Nelson Blvd. acl-live.com. — P.B.
