'Stranger Things' actor brings his band Calpurnia to the Scoot Inn
We're not usually boosters of actors who rock. Their bands are often vanity projects without signficant musical depth. (See also: Johnny Depp's Hollywood Vampires or Kevin Bacon's Bacon Brothers.) But Calpurnia, the new project from 16-year-old Finn Wolfhard, who plays Mike Wheeler on the hit Netflix show "Stranger Things" might be an exception that proves the rule.
Wolfhard's Vancouver-based quartet is assembled of fellow teen rockers, including YouTube guitar sensation Ayla Tesler-Mabe. Their debut EP "Scout," produced by Cadien Lake James, is a satisfying platter of jangly retro rock and vaguely psychedelic indie ruminations. The band plays with surprisingly solid chops and unpolished verve.
It might be a winning formula. Their Jan. 11 show at the Scoot Inn is technically sold out. The band will appear at Waterloo Records for a signing the following morning at 11 a.m. Waterloo reps note that the band will only be signing copies of their record and CDs. No "Stranger Things" memorabilia will be signed..
Season three of "Stranger Things" is set to air on July 4.
