OUR TOP PICKS
Friday: Armadillo Christmas Bazaar with Shinyribs, Jackie Venson, Gina Chavez at Palmer Events Center. It’s about the same age as the “Austin City Limits” TV show, though there’s no official record on whether it’s the longest-running bazaar in the history of armadillos. What’s certain, though, is that these 12 days of Christmas, from Dec. 13 to 24, allow Austinites a chance to catch many of the city’s best local musicians, along with access to dozens of booths with potential gift items for sale. Night two of the bazaar features the top-drawing act of the whole run, Shinyribs, at 7 p.m., with additional sets from Jackie Venson at 3 p.m. and Gina Chavez at noon. Daily tickets are $10. 900 Barton Springs Road. armadillobazaar.com. — P.B.
Friday: Chuck Prophet & Stephanie Finch at Cactus Cafe. We’ve grown accustomed to San Francisco rocker Prophet’s incendiary shows with his band the Mission Express at the Continental Club, but here’s an intriguing change of pace: He and keyboardist Stephanie Finch, his wife, will pare things down for an acoustic duo show at one of Austin’s best listening rooms. $20-$24. 8:30 p.m. 2247 Guadalupe St. cactuscafe.org. — P.B.
Friday: Holiday Groove at Empire. What’s that, Bad Santa? Buttoned up choral carols aren’t your speed? Well, you’re in luck. Austin Groove Project presents a bluesy, soulful, hip-hop holiday experience. The killer bill includes hip-hop heavies Magna Carda, young blues standouts the Peterson Brothers and Jackie Venson, and rising R&B star Alesia Lani. Sibling hip-hop trio the Bishops, Vapor Caves, the electro-groove project featuring Yadira Brown and Boombaptist and rhythm kingpin D Madness also play the two-stage bash. $15. 8 p.m 606 E. Seventh St. empireatx.com. — D.S.S.
Friday: Glorietta, Texas Gentlemen at Scoot Inn. The star power in Glorietta, a mostly Austin indie supergroup of sorts, is attention-getting: Matthew Logan Vasquez of Delta Spirit, Kelsey Wilson of Wild Child, Adrian Quesada of Black Pumas et al., David Ramirez, Jason Robert Blum and Seattle ringer Noah Gundersen. This summer they put out a self-titled album on local label Nine Mile; not surprisingly, their respective other commitments have made live shows uncommon, but December brings an opportunity for the home-for-the-holidays bash. Dallas indie-roots jammers the Texas Gentlement open. $22. 8 p.m. 1308 E. Fourth St. scootinnaustin.com. — P.B.
Saturday: Home for the Holidays with Carolyn Wonderland, Marcia Ball, Shelley King at Antone’s. It feels good to be home. Well, sometimes. The newest (and swankiest) version of the storied Austin club is a fine place to make merry memories with loved ones or quell your quarreling with cantankerous Aunt Sally. With powerful pipes and blues/R&B bona fides, this mighty trio of artists will make your favorite Christmas songs soar. 7 p.m. $20. 305 E. Fifth St. antonesnightclub.com. — D.S.S.
Saturday: Bubble Puppy, Jeff Clark & Friends at El Mercado Backstage. A member of prominent 1970s Austin rock band Too Smooth, Clark recently was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. He says this show will be his last; many of his fellow musician friends will join him, including Van Wilks, Jimmie Randall, John Staehely and Annie Rost, plus veteran Austin psych-rockers Bubble Puppy in the headlining slot. $15. 8 p.m. 1302 S. First St. elmercadorestaurant.com. — P.B.
Thursday: Austin City Limits Radio Starry Night with Shakey Graves at ACL Live. The station formerly known as KGSR always has a big holiday concert, and this year is no exception, with hometown hero Shakey Graves headlining. Nashville alt-rock band Moon Taxi opens. $36.50-$49.50. 8 p.m. 310 Willie Nelson Blvd. acl-live.com. — P.B.
