Equal Axis late night dance party celebrates Austin's queer community
Red Bull Music has teamed up with local groups Unbounded and Thank You For Sweating to present Equal Axis, a night of dance music and immersive art that promoters describe as a "one-of-a-kind, multi-sensory experience focused on elevating and celebrating the city's queer community."
The party kicks off at 10 p.m. Dec. 15 and will continue until 4 a.m. with Central Texas-based artists House of Kenzo, JEVA, Thank You For Sweating, and Wet Male keeping the dance floor hot. British-Japanese DJ/producer Maya Jane Coles also will perform, making her Texas debut at the event.
In addition to music, the event, set to go down at 607 Neches St. in downtown Austin, will feature three dimensional art installations, projections and a variety of live performances and speakers. Austin-based performers on the roster include aerialists and contortionists Caty Mae and Sarah Sparkles; dancers and genderqueer personalities Josue Allen Hart and Purple Matter; and drag queens Belladonna, Leia Sakura, Ruby Knight and Tatiana Cholula.
The two Austin groups involved in the event both grew out of the city's DIY arts scene. Unbounded is a creative agency that specializes in curation, talent booking and production with a special interest in projects that bring visibility to traditionally underrepresented demographics, including people of color, queer, gender non-conforming and non-binary individuals and groups. Thank You For Sweating hosts all-night dance parties in warehouses, creating spaces where everyone has the freedom to be themselves. "Whether you're a drag queen, a student at UT or an engineer, you can dance like no one's watching, until you're sweating," says Charles Moon, the group's founder.
Tickets to the event are $10 in advance, $15 day of show. More information is available at redbullmusic.com.
