Mitski, Drivin' N' Cryin', Ladies of LCD Soundsystem among top shows this week

Friday-Saturday: Booker T. Jones at Antone’s. Grammy Award winners for lifetime achievement are a pretty limited lot, but Jones is one of them. Famous early for his 1962 top-5 instrumental hit “Green Onions” with his band the M.G.’s, Jones went on to work with many of the biggest names in R&B, rock and soul over the decades. His entry into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame came within the Hall’s first decade (his 1992 class also included Johnny Cash and Jimi Hendrix). It’s fair to call this an opportunity to hear a living legend at Austin’s home of the blues. Local soul movers Tomar & the FCs open both nights. $25-$30. 9 p.m. 305 E. Friday-Saturday: Drivin’ N’ Cryin’ at Continental Club. Hailing from Georgia, Kevn Kinney’s band sometimes got cast with Southern jam-rock stereotypes, but Kinney’s songwriting was always far too deep for such a simple classification. Three decades after a run of major-label records that put them on the map, the group remains a dominating live band, as they proved on a sweaty summer night at the east side Sahara Lounge a couple of years ago. It’s good to see them get this two-night weekend showcase at the city’s premier nightclub. The Mallett Brothers open Friday; Caleb Caudle opens Saturday. $20-$22. 10 p.m. 1315 S. Saturday: Sweetheart of the Rodeo Tour with Roger McGuinn & Chris Hillman, Marty Stuart & His Fabulous Superlatives at ACL Live. Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Byrds’ landmark “Sweetheart of the Rodeo” album, this tour features Byrds co-founders McGuinn and Hillman backed by country star Stuart and his indeed quite fabulous bluegrass-and-beyond backing crew. They’ll play the album in full as well as other Byrds and Stuart material, plus a few favorites from the late Tom Petty, who produced Hillman’s 2017 album. $49.50-$79.50. 8 p.m. 310 Willie Nelson Blvd. acl-live.com. — P.B.

Saturday: Mitski at Emo’s. In a recent interview on "The Daily Show," singer-songwriter Mitski said she named her new album “Be the Cowboy” because she was so attracted to the Marlboro Man myth of the American cowboy. There’s an arrogance and freedom to it that felt very foreign to her as an Asian-American woman. But embracing her inner cattle rustler didn’t add a twang to her sound. Instead it liberated her to dive deeper into the sweeping drama of her intricate, emotional compositions. Saturday: Ladies of LCD Soundsystem at Cheer Up Charlie’s. Nancy Whang and Gavin Rayna Russell of the dance punk band LCD Soundsystem have a new DJ tour celebrating their work as solo artists. Monday: House of Songs Songwriters Farewell to Threadgill’s. The longtime Austin restaurant will close its south location at the end of this month, but quite a few local musicians have booked gigs to pay final respects in recent weeks. The local outfit House of Songs has held many events for its international songwriters here over the years, but the final salute will focus on hometown acts, with ringleader Graham Weber bringing Matt the Electrician, Ali Holder, Barbara Nesbitt, Daisy O'Connor, Graham Wilkinson, Lesly Reynaga, Sarah Sharp and others along for the adios. $10. 6 p.m. doors. 301 W. Monday: Lissie at Antone’s. An Austin favorite since her early-career visits to South by Southwest and ACL Fest almost a decade ago, singer-songwriter Lissie released her fourth album, “Castles,” earlier this year. Like that of Brandi Carlile, her music exists in a realm that touches on indie, folk and pop genres but transcends their boundaries, much to Lissie’s credit. Elise Davis opens. $22. 8 p.m. 305 E. Wednesday: Kevin Welch at Waterloo Records. Oklahoma native and Wimberley resident Welch has been a left-of-center-country treasure since his self-titled major-label debut came out in 1990. He was never a great fit for mainstream Nashville but worked really well around its edges, leading to his partnership with the artist-run Dead Reckoning collective. Some of that crew’s key players return on his new album “Dust Devil,” a sterling new set of songs that run the range of the Americana genre, from the bluesy opener “Blue Lonesome” to the sweet piano-and-fiddle-based ballad “The Girl in the Seashell” to the classic country-folk title track. Thursday: Lisa Fischer at One World Theatre. A Grammy winner for the R&B song “How Can I Ease the Pain” off her 1991 debut album, Fischer subsequently spent most of the next couple decades on tour with the Rolling Stones, Tina Turner and other major artists.
