Yes, it’s crazy hot, but there are still plenty of opportunities to catch cool tunes this month, we offer a broad overview in This Week’s Playlist: August in Austin.
A few highlights:
For hip-hop fans the August supershow is Lil Wayne, who plays at the Austin360 Amphitheater on Saturday, August 17 alongside T.I., 2Chainz and G-East. The Mohawk, however, has a couple smaller shows worth noting as Lil B plays the club on Saturday and ‘Run the Jewels’ a new collaboration project by Killer Mike and El-P hits the club on Monday, August 5. Also worth noting, Oakland crew Souls of Mischief will be at Red 7 next Friday and Chalie 2na, the bassman from Jurrasic 5 plays the Parish on August 22.
Country superstar Keith Urban swings by the Austin360 amphitheater on August 15 and Pat Green plays the Whitewater Amphitheater in New Braunfels on Saturday. If you prefer your crooning in a more Tex-centric, intimate and free setting, check out Ray Wylie Hubbard who plays Unplugged at the Grove this Friday or Mike and the Moonpies at Stubb’s BBQ on August 15.
Bay Area rockers Ty Segall brought down the house last time they played the Mohawk. They return to that venue on August 27. Indie rocker Kurt Vile is also scheduled to play the club on August 20.
Blues on the Green closes out its 2013 season with a preview of the Austin City Limits Music Festival featuring Austin-based acts White Denim, My Jerusalem and the Preservation on August 7. Wanda Jackson plays the Continental Club with fellow rockabilly filly Rosie Flores on Friday. Bruno Mars plays the Erwin Center on August 14. Gladys Knight and the Ojays play ACL Live on Friday and blues legend Buddy Guy closes out the month at the club on the 31.
That’s just scratching the surface of all the great music going down this month. For a full rundown, check out Peter Mongillo’s story or listen to This Week’s Playlist: August in Austin.
