ACL Fest Band of the Day: Purity Ring
Editor’s note: This article was originally published August 21, 2013
With two full weekends of ACL Fest looming in the not-too-distant-hopefully-cooler future, it’s time to start digging into the lineup, so once again we start our daily band briefs.
From: Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
ACL set: 7:45 p.m. Fri., Austin Ventures
In 50 words, or so: The electronic duo’s debut Shrines is a darkly ethereal fever dream, melding Megan James’ pixie-sweet vocals with Corin Roddick’s terrifying, droning beats and haunting, shimmery synths. Also, the lyrics are downright Lovecraftian: If you think Passion Pit excels at musical/lyrical contrasts, listen to what Purity Ring conjures up on tracks like the bewitching “Fineshrine.”
Could share a bill with: Grimes, CHVRCHES, James Blake, Björk
Sights and sounds: The band is known for bringing dazzling visuals to their live shows, including a touch-responsive musical instrument/lighting machine custom-built by Roddick and handstitched costumes designed by James.
