In 50 words or so: June’s striking voice alternates effortlessly from unfalteringly bright to dusky and haunting on her impressive Americana debut released this year. The album evokes a journey through the rural Tennessee of June’s upbringing with stops in creaky churches and dusty dancehalls and plenty of lazy summer evenings whiled away on humid back porches.
Could share a bill with: Lyle Lovett, Avett Brothers, Bela Fleck, Carolina Chocolate Drops
Old-fashioned gal: Enamored with American music of the 20s and 30s June cites artists like Mississippi John Hurt, Elizabeth Cotten and The Carter Family as her heroes. She also claims to own everything with ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax’s name on it.
