The developer of a new mixed-use project going up on Austin’s east side has set aside some space for up-and-coming local musicians to further their careers.

Houston-based Grayco Partners, builder of the South Shore District development, will provide the Austin Music Foundation with rent-free on-site offices that should open by year’s end, the company said.

South Shore District, which features a mix of apartments, shops and restaurants, is located at 1333 Shore District Drive, just off East Riverside Drive.

“I’m delighted to have the Austin Music Foundation’s new home at South Shore District,” said Jeff Gray, president of Grayco Partners. “It’s exciting we were able to benefit such a fine organization in our commitment to provide a rent-free space for community benefit to the city of Austin.”

A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new facility will be held Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m.

Danny Gillespie, president of the Austin Music Foundation, said the organization plans to use the space to build a second Creative Media Center similar to one it already operates near the Mueller development.

The Creative Media Center provides musicians with access to technology needed to create a variety of digital media, such as audio and video recordings, graphics and websites. Mentoring and training opportunities are offered, as well.

The center located in the South Shore District development will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays once construction is completed, according to the Austin Music Foundation.

“The demand for our services has grown since opening the Creative Media Center in 2011,” Gillespie said. “Adding a location in the heart of the burgeoning East Riverside music scene is a perfect fit for us.”

South Shore District is located within walking distance of several well-known live music venues, including Antone’s and Emo’s.

The development’s first phase, featuring three apartment buildings, opens this fall. Restaurants and shops that have signed leases at South Shore District so far include Walgreens, Starbucks, Verts Kebap, AT&T, SmileBest Dental and Orthodontics and Texan Urgent Care.
