Listen to artists playing around town in This Week’s Playlist: Free Week.
V.I.P., Phranchyze at the Mohawk. Austin natives KPaul and Pimpin’ Pen, collectively known as V.I.P., have a release “Country Cousins” in the works for 2014. The joints released so far bang with a slowed down Dirty South groove hung with soulful hooks. Self-proclaimed South Austin Hero Phranchyze also appears on this bill, which has a lineup that reads like an ATX hip-hop family reunion — Gerald G, LNS Crew, Team Next, Crew 54 and Krypol Haze all perform.
Ghost Wolves at the North Door. Garage rockers and distortion aficionados Jonathan Konya and Carley Wolf churn out grimey rock that echoes with electric blues and simmers with Southern sass. Holy Wave and Christian Bland & The Revelators also perform.
Also playing. Otis the Destroyer (formerly the Couch), The Baker Family at Red 7; Kathryn Legendre, Chris King & the Liberators at the Sahara Lounge;
The Mole People, Shivery Shakes at the Mohawk. Electro psych punks the Mole People throw down power pop hooks with ample fuzz and a dash of soul. Shivery Shakes have a dreamier approach to pop, melodic, catchy and lyrically relatable. Taft, RF Shannon and Battle Bend also perform
Also playing. Tia Carrera, Think No Think at Hotel Vegas; Speak, Hikes, Field Dress at Holy Mountain; Ben Ballinger, Slowmo Drags at Red 7
My Education at the North Door. 2013 was a good year for orchestral indie artists My Education, who enjoyed a successful European tour, sold out dates in Texas and a vinyl release of their 2002 debut CD “5 Popes.” The band’s version of post-rock climbs beyond psychedelic shoegaze, navigating sludgey overpasses and scaling toward epic composition. Halaska, Fires Were Shot and Play By Numbers also perform.
Also playing. Dikes of Holland, Coma in Algiers at Beerland; Elvis’ birthday with King Pelvis at Hotel Vegas; The Ripe, Think No Think at the Mohawk; Mighty Mountain, Isaiah the Mosaic at Red 7; After Hours, Dirtleg at Sahara Lounge; Groove Think, Henry & the Invisibles at Stubb’s; Roxy Roca at Spiderhouse Ballroom.
The Golden Boys at Red 7. These guys are raw, gritty, no-holds-barred Austin rock scene lifers. Their 2012 release “Dirty Fingernails” moved Statesman writer Joe Gross to declare them the best band in Austin.
Vagabond Collective presents Sphynx at the Mohawk. An evening of excellent electropop headlined by Queen enthusiasts Sphynx, who pack plenty of falsetto and emotional swoops in between the bleeps and bloops. Goldenspine, Corduroi, Major Major Major also perform.
Also playing. Latasha Lee & the Black Ties at Spiderhouse Ballroom, Diamond Cuts, Jericho featuring Ruby Jane at Stubb’s; Obscured by Echoes, Residual Kid at Holy Mountain; Jimmy and the Mustangs at Lambert’s.
