In an excellent video produced by Blastro 2, the Spanish-language sister station of locally produced online video site Blastro, two of Austin’s top DJs, Orion and Mel meet up at Hotel Vegas to talk about their musical roots and the experience of crate digging.

Orion is part of the Peligrosa DJ collective, known for red hot dance parties where cumbia and merengue smash up against electro funk and hip-hop. In addition to hosting the longest running weekly hip-hop party in the city (and possibly the state), Monday nights at Nasty’s, DJ Mel spins 80s jams at his regular Rock the Casbah events and has also been known to provide soundtrack selections for the Obama administration on occasion.

The Peligrosa DJ crew celebrates its 6th anniversary on Friday, December 20th at Empire Control Room with a blowout bash. The group will induct their “Puerto Rican homie” stellar turntablist DJ Manny into the collective and the full crew, including Houston rapper Chingo Bling will be on hand to join the party.

Mel has been on hiatus from Nasty’s while travelling this month, but he’ll be down at Plush on Friday, December 6 for an old school throwdown with Coy West and Jeff Scroggin.
