SXSW playlist primer: Deborah Sengupta Stith’s picks

First off, as my esteemed colleague Peter Blackstock pointed out last week, South by Southwest is huge and this playlist just scratches the surface of the amazing music coming our way next week. These are a few of my favorite tracks, artists I can’t wait to see. Also, this playlist is still a work in progress. Digging through the lineup I keep stumbling across tracks that blow my mind and I want everyone to listen to them RIGHT NOW, so it will continue to evolve as the week goes on.
But let’s dig in to what we’ve got.
I think Aloe Blacc and Kelis will be two of the artists everyone is talking about next week, so they kick off the playlist. From there we drop into a mix that goes heavy on the hip-hop (some of which is quite explicit), soul and dance tracks.
Hip-hop newcomers Isaiah Rashad and Rittz are likely to have breakout years. Same can be said about Houston’s Doughbeezy, they all make appearances alongside ATX artists League of Extraordinary G and Riders Against the Storm and living legends Nas and Mobb Deep. Childish Gambino and Chance the Rapper, the hip-hop artist I’m most psyched to see also show up.
On the soul side we’ve got everyone from veteran crooner Lee Fields and the Expressions to Har Mar Superstar who might be the most unlikely sex symbol at SXSW 2014.
There are also some oddball international tracks and fun stuff to make you dance. But enough talk, give it a listen!
