This week’s playlist: A tale of two festivals

With South By Southwest just barely in the rearview mirror, the iHeart Radio Country Festival and Austin Urban Music Festival will both call the city home this weekend. And you thought Austin was done with music festivals for a little while.
The latter festival, slated for Friday and Saturday, will bring a helping of R&B, gospel and soul to Butler Park, the same space that hosted Foster the People and Childish Gambino just a couple of weeks ago for SXSW. Headliners taking the stage include funk favorites Kool & the Gang, Prince associate Morris Day (of “and the Time” fame) and ’90s-group-turned-reality-stars SWV.
The former festival, on Saturday, will fill up the Frank Erwin Center in Downtown Austin with some of modern Nashville’s brightest luminaries, including Luke Bryan, Lady Antebellum, Carrie Underwood and more. Check back with Austin360 later this week for music writer Peter Blackstock’s preview.
Take this rare musical convergence as an opportunity for some cross-genre listening. Our playlist of the week features both down-home charm and smooth soul, courtesy of Austin’s two upcoming festivals.
