Thank you very much, Hotel Vegas supports SXSW Cares

A couple scenes from tonight’s Elvis themed SXSW Cares Big Benefit show at Hotel Vegas.

It was a low-key scene around 11:15. DJ Andrew McCalla was spinning vintage doo-wop and rock ‘n’ roll on the inside while folks chilled out on the back patio. The pomp shop was offering $10 pompadours while a manicure station was on site for ladies (and gents) who wanted fancy fingers.

At midnight there was a dance off with a $100 cash prize going to the first place winner and a bar tab awarded to number two. Moves were busted and attitude was thrown but the winner by a long shot was Aida Scarborough an amateur dancer and choreographer who mixed back bends and splits with her hip twists and shimmys to take the top prize. Touchingly, the native Austinite immediately donated the money back to the SXSW Cares fund.

Scarborough said she was determined to win so she could donate the prize. That’s the kind of spirit that makes this city beautiful.

Finally, Elvis tribute band King Pelvis took the stage to take the night a royal rock ‘n’ roll send off. The fact that two members of his back up band were rocking sparkly dresses just made it sweeter.
