John Fullbright at Stateside at the Paramount. A Grammy nominee for his 2012 studio debut “From the Ground Up” — which followed a 2009 live album recorded when he was barely out of his teens — Oklahoma singer-songwriter John Fullbright refocuses his music from acoustic guitar to piano on a new disc simply titled “Songs,” due out May 27. Dead Prez at Empire Control Room. When the standard-bearing political hip-hop act came through town during SXSW 2013, it was clear that the group’s radical stance has not shifted over the years. Their message is still “Bigger Than Hip Hop.” They railed against the government, big business and public education, but their tone seems to have softened. As they’ve matured, they’ve mellowed, growing into warm and welcoming elder statesmen ready to impart their hard-earned knowledge to the next generation.
